Limoneira Unleashes The Natural Power Of Lemons And Builds Lemon Sales Through Fun And Easy Consumption Ideas

In a June 28th press release, Limoneira announced a new marketing campaign to "Unleash the Natural Power of Lemons." "Lemons are one of the most versatile items in the produce department," says John Carter, Limoneira's Director of Global Sales. "Our 'Unleash The Natural Power of Lemons' campaign takes advantage of today's technology, and it's fun, informative, and easy. Everyone knows that lemons are a great recipe ingredient and enhancer, but they also have many uses in the areas of health, lifestyle, beauty, and cleaning. These applications are represented by fun icon images in conjunction with our consumer QR code that links to our website lemon shopper pages."

"It's about driving lemon consumption in a fun and easy way," says Alex Teague, Limoneira's Chief Operating Officer. "It's a given that lemons are in the produce department, but with consumers' ever increasing focus on natural products, we'd like them to think about lemons when they're in the cleaning, health, beauty, and household aisles, and we want to help drive more lemon sales for our retail partners."

Limoneira's "Unleash the Natural Power of Lemons" campaign will appear in citrus trade publications and through social media programs. "Now that the base communication vehicle and message have been established, we will continue to expand the application across packaging, advertising, and promotions," notes Carter. "We want to make it as easy as possible to help our customers connect the consumer to the tree." To Unleash the Natural Power of Lemons visit www.limoneira.com/Agribusiness/Lemons/Customers/Shopper.

Plans For What Could Become A Revolutionary New Waste To Energy Plant In Ventura County Move Closer To Reality

Limoneira Hot Air Ballooning
Waste to Energy Conceptual Image.

On June 26, the Ventura County Star reported that the Ventura County Board of Supervisors found that protected farmland may be used for composting facilities without violating the county's land use laws.

Any such plant must benefit county agricultural operations. The immediate beneficiary will be Agromin, which plans to open a plant on prime agricultural land owned by Limoneira. The plant is anticipated to occupy up to 30 acres adjacent to Agromin's existing operations on Limoneira property.

Agromin CEO Bill Camarillo said the whole county, not just the company, would benefit. Camarillo said the project would help Ventura County communities meet a statewide recycling goal that calls for 75 percent of trash to be diverted from landfills as well as to boost profitability for growers. "This is revolutionary for Ventura County," he said after getting the board's support. The plant would be designed to accept up to 152,000 tons per year of waste delivered by commercial waste haulers and landscapers. The material would be converted into fertilizer and energy.

The plant would accept food discarded by restaurants, supermarkets, schools, and manufacturers; yard clippings; and wood waste, which consists of trees and lumber. Agromin would lease the land from Limoneira, an agribusiness company based in Santa Paula. Limoneira also is exploring being a partner in the venture, CEO Harold Edwards said. Calling the project "really appealing," he said it not only provides an alternative to sending waste to landfills but also will help local farmers stay in business.

"The goal is to be able to provide an alternative to petroleum-based fertilizers that will create a competitive advantage for local farmers to make them more efficient and keep them in Ventura County for a lot longer," Edwards said. "If we can prove it here, we see a really interesting opportunity to take this, as a viable model, all throughout the state of California and potentially nationally, as a solution for green waste."

A Recent Wall Street Journal Article Highlights Wine Industry Trends That Could Prove Positive For Windfall Farms

Limoneira Hot Air BallooningWindfall Farms is an exclusive community that promotes and enhances the sustainability of local agriculture and celebrates agrarian lifestyles in the heart of what has become one of the most important wine growing regions in the United States.

Underlying Windfall Farms is a subdivision consisting of 76 lots of approximately 10 acres each. This subdivision was recorded in 1921 with unconditional certificates of compliance in place which offers a variety of development opportunities. Lots between 10 and 40 acres are currently available. The breathtaking setting, combined with the world class facilities, has the potential to become an exclusive agricultural estate community in the heart of the Central Coast wine country.

According to an economic impact report created for the city of Paso Robles, the area is a unique wine region blessed with optimal growing conditions for producing premium and ultra premium wines: greater day-to-night temperature swings than any other appellation in California, distinct micro-climates, diverse soils, and a long growing season. As a result, more than 40 wine grape varieties are grown in Paso Robles, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, and Zinfandel, the area's heritage wine varietal.

Recently, the Wall Street Journal said that a shortage of fruit is putting a squeeze on California's wine industry. According to the article, California grape prices were in decline for a decade, after expansion in the 90s flooded the market. With an excess of grapes leading to lower prices, many growers have held off on planting, or switched to other crops that promised higher returns. But now demand for wine has grown, and grape prices have soared. Cabernet red grapes have doubled in price in the past year.

"Right now, I don't have enough grapes of any variety in any part of the state,'' Nat DiBuduo, president of Allied Grape Growers, said to the WSJ. DiBuduo says the prices for Thompson seedless red grapes have about quadrupled since 2001.

Windfall Farms offers potential investors and/or developer-owners a number of upsides --- market potential for future Windfall wine grapes, significant water in a state where this commodity has become liquid gold, and the potential to create agrarian lifestyle estates.

Festive Frozen Lemons for Taste and Health

Many chefs have discovered that freezing lemons and then grating them offers a wonderful taste sensation (and they're healthy too!).

This is something that can also easily be done at home. Sprinkle in cocktails, and over salads and add to soups, ice cream, pastas and fish dishes. C'est fantastique!

Lemon peel contains as much as 5 to 10 times more vitamins than lemon juice and the peel (like lemon juice) helps eradicate toxic elements in the body.

Food With Integrity-Chipotle Philosophy Pairs Perfectly With Limoneira

Limoneira Hot Air BallooningWhen Chipotle (pronounced chi-POAT-lay) opened its first store in 1993, the idea was simple: demonstrate that food served fast didn't have to be a "fast-food" experience. They use high-quality raw ingredients, classic cooking methods, a distinctive interior design, and have friendly people take care of each customer - features that are more frequently found in the world of fine dining. When they opened, there wasn't an industry category to describe what they were doing. Some 16 years and around 1,000 restaurants later, they compete in a category of dining now called "fast-casual," the fastest growing segment of the restaurant industry, where customers expect food quality that's more in line with full-service restaurants, coupled with the speed and convenience of fast food.

Chipotle uses a variety of ingredients that they purchase from carefully selected suppliers as an important element of their "Food with Integrity" philosophy. They concentrate on where they obtain each ingredient, and this has become the cornerstone of their continuous effort to improve their food. Some of the ingredients they use include naturally raised pork, beef, and chicken, as well as organically and sustainably grown produce.

"Chipotle purchases Limoneira's 140 and 165 (sizes that denote lemons per carton) choice lemons," says Limoneira Sales Manager Rick Goodside. Goodside also said that Limoneira's commitment to sustainability coincides perfectly with the Chipotle's values. "We were able to take them through our visitors center which highlights our almost 120 year history. When they saw the exhibits on water, organic recycling, solar-power, work-force housing, and a master planned community, they understood that sustainability and stewardship are part of Limoneira's DNA.

His latest ingredient obsession is Meyer Lemons. "After I discovered this incredible produce from Limoneira Ranch, I started playing with them for new dishes. "Love'em!" says Chef Mairinger. We return the compliment, as we love his delightful and nuanced interpretations from one of Europe's most interesting dining regions. For more information visit www.bierbeisl-la.com.
Santa Paula Wedding At Limoneira Ranch By Desiree Shuey Photography

Brides and grooms say I do to a beautiful wedding at Limoneira Ranch. There are many options and a number of beautiful venues. Recently A. Blaire from "Style me Pretty," a wedding and lifestyle blog, conveyed that she loves all weddings and that there wasn't one type of affair that makes her swoon over the next. She did note however that she had a soft spot for al fresco versions. She felt that these types of weddings were really like one large dinner party under the stars celebrating two people who just can't get enough of each other. She waxed poetic about this recent lovely affair at Limoneira Ranch. The beautiful photos shown here are by Desiree Shuey. For more information please visit www.stylemepretty.com.
