2014 Food Trends - Lemon Steps Into The Sun

With the help of a team of more than 100 famous chefs, restaurateurs, and foodies, Sterling-Rice Group, an advertising and branding consultancy based in Boulder, Colorado, identified the top ten food trends that will be served on restaurant menus and line supermarket shelves across the U.S. in 2014 and lemons are at the #1 spot on the list, according to a press release.

The often unmentioned brightener of dressings and sauces, lemon shines as a main ingredient in its purest freshest juice or preserved form. The simple, vibrant citrus will show up in its purest form - juice.

"Lemon is pure. Lemon is versatile. Lemon is nostalgic. For those reasons, it - and not other citrus - will be the flavor of next year," said Kazia Jankowski, associate culinary director of Sterling-Rice Group. "Lemon's bright flavor is fresh and unadulterated. It ties into the cuisines of the Mediterranean, which are growing in popularity. Plus, it brings back memories of lemonade afternoons, Grandma's lemon bars, and summer desserts with lemon meringue pie."

SRG's proprietary research is based on key societal shifts driving long-term food trends. The predictions provide insight for food industry companies to better develop, position, market, and sell food products.

Thanksgiving Around The World

Prayers of thanks and special thanksgiving ceremonies are common among almost all religions after harvests and at other times. The Thanksgiving holiday's history in North America is rooted in English traditions dating from the Protestant Reformation. It also has aspects of a harvest festival, even though the harvest in New England occurs well before the late-November date on which the modern Thanksgiving holiday is celebrated.

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and "thanksgiving" was prompted by a good harvest. Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the "First Thanksgiving," including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631.

As President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America marking November 26, 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer devoted to "the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be."

Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l'Action de grce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Although the original act of Parliament references God, and the holiday is celebrated in churches, the holiday is mostly celebrated in a secular manner. Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday in all provinces in Canada, except for New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. While businesses may remain open in these provinces, the holiday is nonetheless recognized and celebrated regardless of its status.

Labor Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in Japan. It takes place annually on November 23. The law establishing the holiday, which was adopted during the American occupation after World War II, cites it as an occasion for commemorating labor and production and giving one another thanks. It has roots in an ancient harvest ceremony (Niiname-sai) celebrating hard work.

The Chinese celebrate August Moon festival, which falls on the 15th day of 8th lunar month of their calendar. Chinese believe that the moon is roundest and brightest on this day. Unlike the famous pumpkin pie, the Chinese delicacies consist of moon-cake. Friends and relatives convey their regard to each other by gifting moon cake.

The celebration falls on 15th of August, which is known as Chu-Sok (meaning "fall evening"). It begins on 14th night and continues for three days. Koreans make a dish called 'Songpyon' unique for that occasion consisting of rice, beans, sesame seeds, and chestnuts. Before having the food, the family gathers beneath the moonlight, in remembrance of their ancestors and forefathers. The children dress in long-prescribed dress dancing in circles with an inherent desire of their blessing.

Harold Edwards Featured As One Of The Packer 25

The Packer 25 is a group of professionals who are selected each year for their outstanding contributions to the fresh produce industry. Limoneira CEO Harold Edwards was recently honored for inclusion.

Even though his produce roots are five generations deep in California's lemon growing industry, it's not his familiarity with fruit Harold Edwards' colleagues mention first.

Business savvy is what the sixth chief executive officer of the 120-year-old Limoneira Company is known for. Since taking the top seat at the Santa Paula, California, company in 2003, Edwards has moved the company toward vertical integration, with its supply chain an early target. "We like to link the customers back to the trees," said Edwards, 48.

Another big step was to vertically integrate the marketing of Limoneira's lemons, a duty that had been in the hands of Sunkist Growers for 117 years. "It was absolutely terrifying," Edwards said of leaving Sunkist. "But we realized we were a big player and should have a bigger marketing program. We began selling direct. It completely unleashed our potential." Potential unleashed is how current and former colleagues characterize Edwards' 10 years leading Limoneira. Lee Cole, chairman, president, and chief executive officer for Calavo Growers Inc. works closely with Edwards. The two companies own a percentage of each other. "As a Limoneira board member, I've watched as Harold has developed into a great leader," Cole said. "His financial savvy is a great quality, providing shareholder value for Limoneira." The shift to vertical integration took Limoneira and its shareholder value straight up. Edwards said he is particularly proud that Limoneira's lemon business more than doubled from 2010 to 2012. But growing from 1.4 million 40-pound cartons in 2010 to 3.2 million cartons for 2012-13 is yesterday's news. Edwards wants to hit 10 million cartons within seven years.

From 1992 to 1996, as vice president of finance of Mission Produce, Edwards streamlined the Oxnard, California, grower-shipper's financial operations and helped engineer a successful merger. Earlier in his career he worked for Ralston Purina, rising to general manager of its Agribrands Philippines operation in Manila. Under Edwards, sales volumes increased 16%.

The Packer
The Packer has been a leading source for produce news each week for more than 100 years and is targeted to key decision makers in the produce industry. - Mary Blackmon

Mary Blackmon moved from L.A. back to the South more than three years ago in order to take over her family farm and began learning from passionate farmers who've dedicated their lives, careers - and their livelihoods - to farming in The United States. She has said that these people inspire her and she believes that they are our real stars. She began Farm Star Living because she felt that farmers needed to be better understood and that the farming way-of-life needed to be accessible to everyone. She has learned that our farmers have a lot to say - and a lot of wisdom to share. She shares that valuable insight through her comprehensive site. She also packs a lot of fun into the conversation by including a Farm Fun section which enables visitors to plan trips to working farms and a farm-to-table Finder so that everyone can find a great farm-to-table restaurant.
