Portland, Oregon, City Of Roses

Portland is Oregon's most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest region, after Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Approximately 2,289,800 people live in the Portland metropolitan area. Portland was incorporated in 1851 near the end of the Oregon Trail and is the county seat of Multnomah County. The city is noted for its superior land-use planning and investment in light rail. Because of its public transportation networks and efficient land-use planning, Portland has been referred to as one of the most environmentally friendly, or "green," cities in the world. The city is also known for its abundant outdoor activities, liberal political values, and beer and coffee enthusiasm. Portland is home to a collection of independent microbreweries, microdistilleries, and food carts that contribute to the unofficial but widely-utilized slogan "Keep Portland Weird." Portland's location is beneficial for several industries. Relatively low energy cost, accessible resources, north-south and east-west Interstates, international air terminals, large marine shipping facilities, and both west coast intercontinental railroads are all economic advantages. The US consulting firm Mercer, in a 2009 assessment "conducted to help governments and major companies place employees on international assignments," ranked Portland 42nd worldwide in quality of living; the survey factored in political stability, personal freedom, sanitation, crime, housing, the natural environment, recreation, banking facilities, availability of consumer goods, education, and public services including transportation.

The city's history of attracting and retaining company headquarters is mixed. Major businesses such as Willamette Industries, Louisiana-Pacific, CH2M HILL, U.S. Bank, and Evraz North American (formerly known as Oregon Steel Mills), have moved headquarters out of the city, as have smaller companies such as Lucy Activewear and Northwest Pipe Company. Examples of how the city has attracted a company's world, North American, or U.S. headquarters include Vestas Wind Systems, and sporting goods manufacturers Li-Ning Co., Hi-Tec Sports, KEEN, Inc. and Adidas. Computer components manufacturer Intel is the Portland area's largest employer, providing jobs for more than 15,000 people, with several campuses to the west of central Portland in the city of Hillsboro. The metro area is home to more than 1,200 technology companies. This high density of technology companies has led to the nickname Silicon Forest being used to describe the Portland area, a reference to the abundance of trees in the region and to the Silicon Valley region in Northern California. While manufacturing and hardware have been the core in the past, a budding group of software-oriented startup companies have taken root in Portland as well, supported by new funding organizations and business incubators. Major Grocery Stores in Portland include Albertsons, Safeway, Fred Meyer and Trader Joes.

To Beat The Heat, Limoneira And Switchel Teamed Up To Deliver A Host Of Refreshing Summer Beverages

As the heat of late summer creeps over the nation, everyone looks for inventive (and delicious) ways to keep cool. Lemonade may practically be a summertime tradition, but the fun doesn't have to stop there! Switchel holds a place in history as a revitalizing agent for American farmers who toiled endlessly under the hot summer sun. Thus, it is only logical that this traditional beverage of apple cider vinegar, ginger, and a touch of sweet Vermont maple syrup would join the beloved lemon in the summertime refreshment game. Spice up those old seasonal favorites with these great recipes, brought to life by Limoneira and Switchel. Each drink is the perfect marriage of sugar, spice, and everything lemon-y nice, and are sure to take the edge off of those hot midsummer days.

Switchel is an American Heritage Beverage created by Farmers seeking to quench thirst in the hot summer sun. In 2011, Ely Key and Garrett Riffle started Switchel LLC, a beverage company, based in Brooklyn, NY focused on revitalizing this incredible drink, celebrating the American farmer in today's world, and strengthening the relationship between farming and public consumption.

(Note, in a previous life, Ely worked at Limoneira on sustainability projects and was a project manager on Limoneira's solar orchard project.

Ageless Summer Drinks:

1. Switchel Over Ice with a Lemon: Put a handful of cubes in a cup. Cut lemon wedge from a fresh Limoneira lemon and squeeze smoothly over the ice. Pour Switchel over ice. Feel the ginger spread and soothe throughout the body as the apple cider vinegar and lemon enlighten your mind.

2. Switchel and Seltzer: Put a handful of cubes in a cup. Cut lemon wedge from a fresh Limoneira lemon and squeeze that puppy all over the ice and then just let it drop into the cup. Pour 3 parts seltzer over the ice first and leave room for 2 parts Switchel. Adjust to taste. Fill to the brim and slam that drink down.

3. Hot Switchel - Health Bonus!: Heat up Switchel (like water for tea) in a pot. Add fresh lemon. Consume. Will do wonders for the common cold or upset stomach.

"21 and Older" Summer Cocktails:

4. Switchel Shandy: Go 50/50 beer and Switchel over ice with a lemon. You can use many types of beer to suit your own taste buds, though we suggest a light crisp lager or pilsner. Most refreshing drink on the planet, if we do say so ourselves (and we do).

5. Switchel Spritzer: 3 parts Sauvignon Blanc or Ros to 1 part Switchel, squozen (freshly squeezed) lemon and a dollop of simple rhubarb syrup. Serve over ice or very cold!

Limoneira lemons can be found in leading retail grocers. Visit www.limoneira.com/Unleash for more great lemon-centric tips, recipes and sweet & sour shortcuts. Switchel is available in stores in the New York area and online at www.mouth.com/products/switchel. Visit www.drinkswitchel.com for a list of locations that carry it on their shelves.

An Opportunity To Provide Input On New Home Features In What Will Be Ventura County's Newest Community Development

This new master-planned community will be built on approximately 500 acres of rolling foothills in Ventura County near Santa Paula, CA. This places the community a short drive from the Pacific Ocean and Ventura County's leading cultural facilities. It is envisioned as a distinct "new town" community in that in addition to homes, it would also include services, schools and amenities - most everything you need for day-to-day living.

Approximately 1,500 homes are planned, ranging in size from smaller townhomes and patio homes to larger detached homes on a variety of home site sizes. Corresponding to the large variety of homes will be a wide array of home prices; all of which will be appropriate for the area. The "look and feel" of the community, along with architectural styles of the homes will be planned to complement the local Mediterranean climate.

In addition to a variety of home types, the community is currently planned to include:

  • Walking, hiking and bike paths, not only within the community but also into bordering open spaces
  • A series of "walkable" neighborhoods, interconnected through a series of parks, greenbelts, paseos and plazas
  • New schools and community facilities
  • Athletic facilities including 35 acres of baseball and soccer fields
  • New retail, healthcare and general service facilities
  • Other recreational amenities still being planned
