Greetings Friends and Neighbors,
As we close out Black History Month, let's remember that Black History is American History. In the Village of Broadview, we have our own rich and integral black history, embodied by the remarkable contributions of African American residents who have profoundly influenced our community's development and identity.
This history is characterized by resilience, innovation, and community service. Broadview has been shaped by countless African American leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and citizens who have left indelible marks on its cultural and social landscape. They have advanced the cause of civil rights and social justice, fostered economic growth, and reinforced community cohesion. Prominent figures include educators dedicated to nurturing young minds, politicians and activists striving for equity, and entrepreneurs bolstering the local economy while catering to community needs.
Our local events, like Juneteenth celebrations, activities of the Broadview Freedom School, and Black History Month programs, are not only educational but also reaffirm our commitment to honoring and understanding the profound impact of Black citizens. These initiatives educate younger generations about the achievements and struggles of African Americans both locally and nationally, inspiring a sense of pride and responsibility.
We are in times where division is not the answer; unity is essential for our community to remain strong and resilient. Let's celebrate humanity and continue the work of those who came before us, ensuring Broadview remains a place of inclusivity, opportunity, and unity.
Love and Kindness,
Mayor Katrina Thompson
