It's been a while since I opened Arts Blast with a personal note. This one is an update of sorts as I continue to tweak and adjust, up to my ears and over my head. One thing I'm working on is transitioning from the Road Trip! segment into an expanded Beyond-the-Treasure-Coast calendar.
To go along with that change, I've decided to share a website or two I really enjoy and learn a lot from. This one in particular always leads me astray, an armchair traveler in her glory. I'd love to hear of any road trips seen here that inspire readers to take to the paved or unpaved road.
The friends of Arts Blast who have decided to become sponsors make my day every day. They're now highlighted in each Arts Blast and at willimiller.com, with links to their home pages. When you click to learn more about them, remember to come back to Arts Blast!
Last Friday I added a weekend Arts Blast on the spur of the moment and plan to make it a weekly addition. Or edition.
PLEASE - If you are sending me information about an event or anything else you might like to see in Arts Blast,
SEND IT AS TEXT OR A DOC FILE IN EMAIL. Go ahead and send
an email blast if you want to but it
won't be considered a submission for Arts Blast. Somebody has to type the information into the newsletter form, so just copy and paste it into an email and send it to me.

August 3, 7 a.m. to Noon
Fort Pierce Farmers Market
Initial demonstration will be at the Farmers Market, Melody Square, Fort Pierce.
Leaves are available now. Artists are invited to help & display your art while you learn with the general Saturday morning crowd.
I had to ask what a Bodhi leaf is and Jeanne Johansen obliged:
There are two Bodhi trees in Fort Pierce. They are offsprings of the pipal (Ficus religiosa) also called Bo tree, under which the Buddha sat when he attained Enlightenment (Bodhi) at Bodh Gaya (near Gaya, west-central Bihar state, India).
One tree is located at Sunnier Palms in west Fort Pierce and the other is next to the Fort Pierce Susan Broom Kilmer Library on Melody Street.

ELC's Heather Feather Kramer
|
|
When Heather (Feather) Kramer and her partner, Eddie Perri, happened upon perfect career opportunities in the same perfect place at the same time, Florida’s Treasure Coast was the third winner in the deal. Perri found a graduate research position at Harbor Branch at FAU in Fort Pierce, and Kramer signed on with the Environmental Learning Center in Wabasso as an environmental educator. She said, “I like to combine science and art whenever possible,” and she has found the ideal spot for it.
Things might have been a little trickier for Kramer and Perri had she pursued another interest, becoming a mermaid at Weeki Wachee Springs, but the Treasure Coast has plenty of water and that’s all she needs. Kramer likes anything that has to do with water. “Swimming, surfing, kayaking, you name it.” And then there’s the Indian River Lagoon. “It’s the most biodiverse estuary in North America! Who could ask for anything more! I’ve barely scratched the surface of all the creatures there are to meet!”
|
|
Kramer, 34, was born in Colorado, where she spent 11 years “playing in the creek behind my house and rough-housing with my cousins.” The growing up part happened with her mother’s job relocation to the Pacific Northwest — lots of water there. Eventually Kramer got to New York City and Rockaway Beach. Jamaica Bay, one of Kramer’s favorite places and right at her doorstep, gave her plenty of opportunities to explore and teach.
“I trained teenagers how to teach with an amazing organization called BEAM Center. These young adults took their skills to take positions at summer camps and after schools,” Kramer said. Working with the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, she collaborated with science teachers, and with a group of friends started ARTSinPARTS, “which provided free workshops and a free summer camp to kids in Rockaway after Super Storm Sandy turned our community upside down.” And, no surprise, Kramer was a seasonal National Park Ranger, “where I got to do everything I was doing before, but with the honor of wearing the uniform.”
|
|
Kramer found herself at the Environmental Learning Center at a time when changes are happening, horizons are broadening, flexibility is the name of the game. “I literally do whatever they need. Everyone does. It's such an amazing organization and EPIC team. It's wonderful to step into this job and be able to hit the ground running with such an amazing group of people.”
The best part of Kramer’s job is working with children, she said. “They are such an inspiration to me. It's fascinating to watch their minds work. Not to mention they have yet to unlearn all the wonderful qualities of being human.” With kids in mind, Kramer, writing as Heather Feather, has published ”
Horseshoe Crab’s Crown.
” She is also, remotely, designing curriculum for Gateway National Recreation Area in NYC.
Of course, every silver lining has a cloud and for Kramer it’s those darned no-see-ums and mosquitos. Yep. You’re in Florida now, Heather.

Sunday at the Environmental Learning Center
Kramer and her ELC Earth Enthusiasts workshop students are halfway through a series that starts each session with science and ends with related art. The goal is to “give children ages 7 to 12 hands-on opportunities to interact with their local ecosystems, resulting in a project children can take home.” The two remaining workshops are Fly Like a Bird, Aug.4, and Constellation Kaleidoscopes, Aug. 11. There’s still time to sign up. Get the details online at

The Lindsay School of the Arts
|
|
At The Lindsay School of the Arts in Fort Pierce, what you put in is what you get out. Those are the words of Cindy Bridges, president of the school. What she and her artist colleagues are putting in is a means of fulfilling a dream to immerse underserved children in a world of art, motivation, inspiration, and success. From the school’s mission statement: To teach, encourage, mentor, mold, and motivate through all aspects of creativity. To supply the student with tools and skills they can carry with them; that can never be taken away.
|
|
It sounds simple enough when Bridges says it. “I just decided to eliminate the cost of our classes, and give them the quality of a world class, fine, visual, and performing arts center completely free, open to kids from all walks of life.” It wasn’t something she could do alone, however. “When you take a group of artists from your community who love what they do, and put them in a classroom with children that also love and are excited to learn about things they love, it’s easy!”
|
|
Well, the inspiration and determination were easy, but nothing really comes for free. “We started with nothing — no funding at all, just a group of artists who offered to come volunteer and teach classes once a week.” As awareness grows, interest and support are making a difference. A grant from Children’s Services Council of St. Lucie County gave them a way to put on this summer’s performing arts camp. The Art Connection Gallery in Fort Pierce has donated space for the school to display students’ work. The Lindsay School of the Arts teen slam poetry team is competing in Orlando against the best teens in the state!

Vero Beach Youth Pipe Band
|
|
Vero Beach Pipes and Drums has a plan to bring bagpipes and Scottish drumming to 4th and 5th graders at Beachland Elementary School this year. Rehearsals will begin in August in the form of an after-school club, but children who do not attend Beachland may join in at rehearsals Tuesday nights at First Presbyterian Church.
The adult group doesn't play in competitions but the Vero Beach Youth Pipe Band will, according to Pipe Major Jacob Craig. His goal is to prepare a group to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, by 2025, when the students starting now will be seniors in high school. Craig is so determined, focused, and organized that no one will be surprised when the band brings home the gold.
There's a catch, though, and it's all about raising money to buy uniforms and instruments, and assist with student scholarships. Craig explained, "
A set of quality bagpipes can run over $1,000, and a kilt can start at $400. Combined with the many other pieces of the uniform as well as additional required equipment, the cost to be in a Pipe Band can exceed $2,000." Here's how to help:
Attend one of the upcoming fundraiser concerts by the Vero Beach Pipes and Drums, hire the group for your wedding, party, or corporate event, or make a donation by sending a check to the Vero Beach Pipes and Drums, c/o Jacob Craig, 2335 55th Square Vero Beach, FL 32966. The organization is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and all donations are tax exempt. The tax ID is 82-081040.

Wood Sculptor Larry Buist
|
|
Larry Buist is a sculptor of a different kind. With his laminating and wood bending skills, he could be a boat builder but art is where his love lies. Buist is having a solo exhibition, Liquid Wood, at Fifth Avenue Art Gallery in Melbourne, with the opening reception this Friday, Aug. 2, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
The 76-year-old Melbourne artist said he took a sculpture class more than 40 years ago but didn’t let himself get serious about his art until he retired at 70, after 25 years at FIT. He’s dabbled in clay, plaster, wire, paper, and even glue and sawdust mix before settling on wood. With that decision, he ran into problems that required some work arounds. Laminating came about because of “the high cost of good hardwoods and the fragility, in terms of splitting, even if it’s well-dried wood.” Buist discovered a bonus in his move: “I enjoy controlling plywoods alternating colored layers that will swirl and give depth and beauty to the over-all piece.”
|
|
Yes, his art is from lumber or, recently, plywood, but not the plywood you’d buy at the home improvement store to board up for hurricanes. This is the dense, expensive plywood for specialty use and his technique allows him to “work as large as my ideas,” Buist said. “Depending on the strength of wood and the method of assembly I could move outward and upward in any direction and create non-volatile designs.” For the artist, the most creative part of the whole process is the arranging and gluing. For those interested in the technique, go to Buist’s
website and see it all in detail.
Buist gets his ideas from many sources, as artists do: “Other artist’s work, often short visions of something I saw on TV or in a magazine article. I am flooded with potential ideas at all times. Also once a piece is finished, new ideas for a different piece come to me, often different views or arrangement of the same theme.”
|
|
A member of the Art Gallery of Viera for more than eight years, Buist finds himself adrift without a home gallery for his work. A tru artist, Buist said, “I will still sculpt even if I end up filling my house and garage, and the houses of my children!”

Here's a suggestion for uploading information to calendars that allow you to input your own events.
In the
body
of the listing, sometimes called
Description
, make sure to include all dates in each upload. For example: Performances are on March 12-31; or the exhibit is open March 12, 14, 15, and 17. That information should be in all dates you post individually.
If you are a member of the
Cultural Council of Indian River County
, you need this information:
The deadline is MONDAY - 10 days prior to the Wednesday publication.
