Summer is Here!

Summer has arrived in the Rocky Mountains, and with it comes holiday travel, gardening, family time, summer camp, and of course, for some of you, Voluntourism. For others, summer is also a great time to consider your personal giving calendar to not leave everything to the end of the year and holiday giving. However you choose to spend your summer months, we hope you have fun, stay safe and enjoy all that nature offers!

What have we been up to?

This past spring, we helped facilitate our first round of Indigenous Grant-Making with the Silver Gummy Foundation. This has been a learning journey for our team and clients as we navigate the recommendations from the Truth & Reconciliation Commission and how those recommendations apply to non-Indigenous funders.

The Braun Family launched Road2Racing, the first of its kind in Canada. This Amateur Athletics Charity supports youth across Canada to get into motorsports. This has been an amazing journey for both the family and their network of motorsports enthusiasts. We are very excited to see what new heights this organization will reach.

At the Family Enterprise Canada Symposium, Gena moderated a panel discussion with family businesses integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into their business operations and charitable activities. You can read more about this and the work we are doing with families in our article: What is a BCorp and How does it connect with Family Offices?

All the best over the summer holidays, and we will connect with you in the fall!

Doing Well & Doing Good - Feature Companies

We love companies that are in business for good. This quarter we feature two Calgary-based socially conscious companies, Local Laundry and Friday Sock Co. Both companies, started as side projects by ambitious entrepreneurs, are now well-known Calgary brands that give back to the communities that helped them grow.

Inspired by a temperamental washing machine in Sweden, Connor Curran started Local Laundry to produce quality, Canadian-made, ethical and sustainable apparel. Learn more about how Local Laundry supports communities across Canada.

Local entrepreneur Adam Thompson started Friday Sock Co. as a side business while working in corporate sales. Eight years later, $150,000 and 50,000 pairs of socks have been given back into the community. Learn more about Friday Sock Co. and the causes they support.

From Charity to Change - Book Review

In May, we sat down with Hilary Pearson about her latest book, From Charity to Change.

There has been substantial change in the foundation world over the past 20 years; change in how they practice and engage, how they invest, and the part technology has played in foundation evolution.

In her book, Hilary tells the story of why foundations matter in our social and economic ecosystem. Foundations and philanthropy are about caring for others; charity and change. The book discusses the evolution of how foundations play a large role in social change.

Why do Foundations matter? This book tells the stories of 20 Canadian foundations whose work has evolved over the past 20 years, their growth and the impact they have had.
