Members of the Georgetown University community gathered on Saturday, December 1 to celebrate the life of the late Jack Gregory Chirikjian, PhD, founder of the M.S. program in biotechnology and a professor of biochemistry at the university for 46 years. Attendees of the memorial service included members of his family and countless students, faculty, staff and others whose lives he touched over the years. James Giordano, PhD, MPhil, a professor in the departments of neurology and biochemistry and chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program in the Pellegrino Center For Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University Medical Center, has been awarded the Academic Gold Medal of Merit by the Coburg University of Applied Sciences in Coburg, Germany, where he serves as a distinguished visiting professor of brain sciences, technology and ethics.

Elizabeth "Brook" Brown, MD, MPH, an assistant professor of urology at Georgetown University Medical Center, has been selected as a 2019 Gallagher Health Policy Scholar by the American Urological Association. Gallagher Health Policy Scholars spend a year participating in intensive training on issues in health policy, receiving mentorship from seasoned physician volunteers, participating in key meetings and conferences and completing educational public policy activities. The honor also includes $15,000 in funding.

The low unemployment rate in the U.S. is good news to many people, but perhaps not to residents of nursing homes. A recent Georgetown University Medical Center study found that quality of care in nursing homes improves during periods of recession and worsens when the economy is good.

Shavini Fernando (G'18), a graduate student in the Communication, Culture and Technology program who suffers from life-threatening heart and lung damage, won a total of $35,000 at the Leonsis Family Entrepreneurship Prize's "Bark Tank" pitch competition to develop O2Wear, a device she invented that alerts people when their vital signs go out of normal range and calls 911 for help.
