A message from the Executive Director - Melissa Karrer

Hi Friends,

August has arrived, bringing the excitement of the back-to-school season and a variety of activities in the cancer community.

This month, we have numerous outreach events lined up, one of which is a free health screening event at El Centro de San Juan Diego in Lexington on August 25th, tailored for individuals in the Central KY region.

Our 10th annual Links to Hope charity golf scramble is fast approaching on Monday, September 16th! All player slots have been filled, but we are still seeking a sponsor for the lunch. We appreciate your involvement in our events; your support helps us raise awareness of our mission and stand as a symbol of hope and unity for those on their cancer journey.

Whether you are a patient or caregiver seeking resources, or an individual interested in contributing to a Kentucky nonprofit, rest assured that our commitment to providing support services remains steadfast. Contact us today to explore ways we can assist you or engage in one of our upcoming events.

Thank you for following our journey and participating as we work together to be a link to hope for the people of Kentucky.

Cheers,

Melissa

Out and About

Melanie attended the Charity Horse Show hosted by Junior League of Lexington on July 10th. We’re grateful to be one of several worthy organizations to receive funding from the Junior League in 2024.

Meet Our Board

Elizabeth Holtsclaw

During the spring of her senior year of High School Elizabeth Holtsclaw’s mother shared with her a recent diagnosis of breast cancer, which would impact the rest of her life personally and professionally. Quickly learning the meaning of being a caregiver she spent 6 years supporting her mother even through the beautiful end of life moments.

Six months after her mother’s death her father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and given a 5% chance of survival. At only 24 Elizabeth quit her job at a cancer center leading a pain and symptom management research team and to care for him. Throughout the next 23 years she has marveled with her dad at his survival and celebrated him beating the odds.

Meanwhile she had dedicated her career to reducing the burden of cancer for others. She has worked in a breast cancer center leading an outreach program to get more people mammograms. In 2014 she started with the American Cancer Society focusing primarily on cancer prevention, early detection, HPV vaccination and screening in Kentucky. It was in this role that she was introduced and became a passionate KCL partner.

Currently she is working as a consultant supporting coalitions and partnering with the University of Kentucky to develop health literacy tools to increase utilization of at-home colon cancer screening. She’s thrilled to join the KCL board and continue the important work to support such an important mission.

Friend for Life Cancer Support Network is currently seeking cancer survivors and caregivers to become Peer Navigators - trained volunteers who provide one-to-one emotional support to others facing a similar experience.

As a refresher, Friend for Life Cancer Support Network was founded in Kentucky in 1988 and provides cost-free, one-to-one emotional peer support provided by cancer survivors and caregivers trained by medical professionals. Being able to talk with a regular person who's "been there" has been shown to reduce isolation, depression and anxiety and improve overall quality of life for those going through cancer.

What we look for in a Peer Navigator:

The ideal Peer Navigator is someone who is self-motivated and responsible, an attentive listener who is considerate and respectful of others. We require prospective volunteers to complete a professionally directed training program before undertaking their role. Peer Navigators function largely on their own, with minimal direct supervision.

Steps to Become a Peer Navigator:

Complete application form

Provide physician reference (not required for caregivers)

Provide personal reference (someone who knows you well, preferably not family)

Complete training (online modules) or potentially a live training

Interview with organization staff (via Zoom or phone)

Easy Baked Feta Pasta

This is a great recipe to use up that bumper crop of cherry tomatoes that are in season right now.

Delicious and easy are my two favorite words when it comes to preparing a meal & this recipe is no exception.

I prefer bow tie or farfalle protein plus for added fiber and protein, but you can use any pasta you prefer.

Blueberry Chia Pudding

Blueberries are in season now and this recipe is a great way to put them to good use.

At just around 300 or so calories, this is a great treat that will satisfy your sweet tooth and fill you up too.

Chia seeds are very nutritious- a great source of fiber, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids.
