March 2024
LINK TO HOPE NEWSLETTER
A message from the Executive Director - Melissa Karrer
Hi Friends,

March madness has arrived! In addition to some great basketball in the Commonwealth, we turn focus to colon cancer awareness month.

We will be participating in many outreach events during the month of March with multiple partners to get Kentuckians connected with at-home colon screening kits and also navigating those who are uninsured to colonoscopy through our partnership with the Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening and Prevention Program.

Just a reminder that average risk folks should begin colon cancer screening at age 45 - make sure you're talking to your provider if you are experiencing symptoms or have significant family history of colon cancer to begin screening earlier.

Be sure and check out information regarding the upcoming Quarterhorse Marathon Relay event that will take place on March 30 at the Whitehall State Park in Richmond. It is a great event that benefits Kentucky CancerLink - we are thankful to Bob Baney with RaceRise for the support!

Thank you for taking the time to read through our newsletter and please reach out with any questions about our mission!

Let's continue to work together to be a link to hope and make an impact in Kentucky!

Cheers,

Melissa

Thank you to J&H Outdoors for choosing KCL as one of four deserving non-profits for their "Bags to Riches" program for the first half of 2024! When you decline a shopping bag at checkout, J&H Outdoors will donate the equivalent cost of that bag to a charity of choosing and we hope you'll be sure to choose KCL and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Out and About
We're ready to #WipeOutColonCancer for colon cancer awareness month. For average risk individuals (with no symptoms) colorectal cancer screening should begin at age 45. Melissa & Melanie had fun catching up with Victor Puente and Destiny Quinn on Feb. 15th on the WKYT Midmorning show to promote the KCL charity tennis & pickleball event that was held on Feb. 23rd at the Lexington Tennis Club. We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with WKYT.
Melanie & one of our interns, Emily, stopped by J&H Outdoors on Sat., Feb. 17 to help promote KCL double donation day for the "Bags to Riches" promotion currently taking place through the end of May. We love opportunities to share our mission with the community and talk with them about how we help countless Kentuckians!
We had a successful Tennis & Pickleball event on Friday, Feb. 23! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this fun night to support KCL's mission. Special thanks to Lexington Tennis Club for hosting us again this year. We appreciate your partnership!

Delicious Ideas

Pineapple Green Smoothie

This smoothie is not only delicious but full of fiber (which helps prevent colon cancer), protein and rich in vitamin C and bromelain which has anti-inflammatory properties. You can use frozen pineapple in place of fresh to give it a thick and creamy texture. You can also use plant-based milk in place of dairy. Add chia seeds for a boost of extra fiber and omega 3s!

Candied Bacon
Deviled Eggs

Growing up in the 80's it was common to use real eggs for Easter egg hunts. They were, of course, hard boiled first, then dyed beautifully or decorated with stickers or decorative plastic shrink wrap covers. In our house, whatever eggs were collected were then typically used to make deviled eggs.
This recipe is a slight twist on a classic recipe using candied bacon. *You can leave out the bacon to make it a vegetarian offering.

Maryland Crab Cakes

Whether or not you refrain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent, this is a delicious recipe to try any day of the week and if you've ever had crab cakes in Maryland, you never forget them. This simple recipe uses just enough filler to bind the mixture together and the key is to use the freshest ingredients you can find available to you.
