May 2025 Edition

This month, we're gearing up to hit the golf course while highlighting

what POC does best—partnering with organizations across Illinois

to uplift our communities.

Palatine Fires Update

Two multi-unit apartment fires hit people in our immediate area in early February. POC sprang into action with the support of our partners and the community. In partnership with Palatine Township, the Red Cross, Faith Feeds Food Pantry, and many others, we made sure all 16 families affected had immediate shelter and food. But we know that rebuilding a life destroyed by an apartment fire is a long-term project. Through the community’s generosity, $39,544 was raised to support these families in the rebuilding process. As of May 21st, POC has distributed $22,272.50. Each family had (and continues to have) interaction with POC Case Managers so their individual needs can be assessed and met. Sometimes these needs have been met through direct financial assistance from that pool of resources (see attached pie chart), and sometimes through referrals and partnership programs. Our Case Managers will use the remaining donated funds for the direct benefit of the affected families. We have met people’s needs for shelter with rental assistance and furniture, food and clothing, necessary medical items, and mental health services. Thank you for helping.

Statewide Parent Mentor Program Celebrates 30 Years!

Addy, POC's Parent Mentor Program Organizer, attended the convention with organizers and coordinators from across Illinois to celebrate the program's 30th anniversary. The event highlighted the powerful impact the Parent Mentor Program is making statewide. During the celebration, State Representative Mary Beth Canty expressed her strong support for the program and pledged to vote in favor of continued funding, reaffirming her commitment to the Palatine community. POC collaborates with CCSD15 and the Parent Engagement Institute to offer this program in four District 15 elementary schools.

POC Connects with Community

in Hanover Park

POC Community Navigators, in collaboration with the IL Justice Partnership, have been actively engaging at local events to share information about the valuable resources and services POC provides. Most recently, they participated in Mayor Rod Craig’s Kids at Hope Resource Fair in Hanover Park, connecting with families and strengthening community ties.

Celebrating

10+ Years of Lock-In Fun!

ICompete started the Lock-In to create a fun, safe space for CCSD15 kids to enjoy a night full of excitement. It is a highly anticipated time of year with games, activities, and special guest entertainment!

Sixty-four amazing participants enjoyed inflatables, a professional juggler, pillowcase decorating, gym/turf access, tinsel hair, nail painting, flower headbands, and so much more— we packed every room at Falcon Park Recreation Center with fun.

A huge thank you to the ICompete collaborative partners and volunteers for helping us continue our mission of offering free or affordable opportunities for families. A very loud and special thank you to our staff and Future Leaders, who are fiercely loyal and came from work and school to make this event possible!
