"Speedbumpy" Playing Surface for LinnStrument 200

Many of you are probably aware of the “Speedbumpy” alternate playing surface for LinnStrument 128, made by Chris Guichet’s Sound Workshop. It has arched rows to more easily find and slide across them by feel, with tactile indentations at the pitch centers to more easily find the correct pitch, and has identical surface feel and sensitivity to the stock LinnStrument surface.

The news is that Chris is close to releasing a version for the large 200-pad LinnStrument, which is identical to the 128 version except larger for LinnStrument 200 and with slightly smaller tactile indentations at the pitch centers to more easily perform pitch slides. And like the 128 version, it comes in either translucent or black (shown above).

Chris says that the surface will be available to buy and ship in February 2026, but you can preorder for a 15% discount on his site from now through December 5.

Price increases on January 1

In my last monthly newsletter, I informed you that I must raise my prices on January 1, due to inflation and tariffs:

LinnStrument 200: From $1499 to $1649

LinnStrument 128: From 1099 to $1149

Here is more information about why I need to raise the prices. If you've been thinking about buying a LinnStrument, for yourself or as a Christmas present, buy now to avoid the price increase.

Tips & Tricks

Here are some nifty tips and tricks for using LinnStrument:

Quickly switch between two MIDI setups

When Split mode is off, you're using the Per-Split Settings of either the Left or Right Split. To quickly switch between using them, double-tap the Split button.

Pitch sometimes swoops up or down at the start of a note?

Sometimes--especially when using MPE-- you may hear the pitch quickly swoop up or down at the start of a note. This is because the synth is quickly ramping up or down from a specific voice's previous Pitch Bend value to the newly-played note's zero pitch bend value. And the swooping occurs because synths generally smooth the pitch between the discrete MIDI Pitch Bend messages. To work around this, turn on a hidden setting called Reset On Release, which instead of resetting the pitch bend value at the start of a note, resets it upon its release. To learn how, see the Panel Settings page, "Per-Split Settings" tab, then search for "reset on release".

Pitch slides land on the wrong pitch?

Visit the LinnStrument FAQ page, and under the "Problems" tab, read this FAQ:

"When I slide my finger left or right to bend the pitch, the ending note pad of the slide has a different pitch than if I lift my finger and play the same destination note pad. What's wrong?"

Are you a lefty?

If you are a left-handed string player and would feel more comfortable if LinnStrument's pitches increased from right to left, there's a setting for that. Open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, then search for "left hand mode". This setting also permits mirrored pitch in Split mode, in which the pitch increase right to left in the left split, and left to right in the right split.

Want finer pressure resolution?

LinnStrument normally sends 7-bit values for finger pressure, giving 128 levels. If you want more, there's a way to send 14-bit pressure values, giving 16,384 levels. Open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, and search for "7 BT".

Want to use the Panel or Foot Switches to send any CC number?

Open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, and search for "4) Sustain" or "5) cc65".

Want to limit the range of messages sent for Pressure and Y-axis movements?

Open the Panel Settings page, Per-Split Settings tab, and search for all four occurrences of "range limits".

In the Arpeggiator, want to use a panel or foot switch to latch notes on, adding to the arpeggiated chord, after releasing them?

Open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, and search for `"latch".

Want to start/stop the Step Sequencer from a foot switch?

Open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, and search for "Start or Stop the internal step sequencer".

Want finer control over touch sensitivity?

Do you want finer control over touch sensitivity than the Low, Medium and High Sensitivity settings in Global Settings? Open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, and search for `"prescale". But read the warning text in that section before changing it or you might cause the control buttons to stop responding!

Considering buying a used LinnStrument and want to know how old a unit is, and what's been improved over the years?

Visit rogerlinndesign.com and under the Where To Buy menu, select Buying Used. There you can learn how old a specific serial number is, and find a complete list of all hardware improvements that have been made over the years and on which serial number they were added. Note that if you register your used purchase using the link near the top of the LinnStrument Support page, I (Roger) will transfer any remaining warranty to you, and give you a free license for Bitwig 8-Track DAW software.

Christmas Animation

Recent LinnStrument owners may not know about LinnStrument's Christmas animation shown above. To see it, open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, and search for "Christmas".

New Dealer in India

I welcome a new LinnStrument dealer in India: Overtone Audio in Mumbai. This will make it easier for musicians in India to buy LinnStrument without the difficulties of international importing.

Interestingly, the iPad app GeoShred -- which uses the same Fourths String Grid pitch arrangement-- is very popular in India. Perhaps some of those musicians may be interested getting a LinnStrument to add velocity and pressure sensing, the tactile feedback of individual note pads, and a large plain surface.
