Hello from Roger Linn--

1) Engineering files for LinnStrument parts now available for download

I've been impressed with Chris Guichet's "Speedbumpy" alternate playing surface for LinnStrument. To help his efforts, I gave him my engineering files for the stock playing surface, which gave him a better starting point to work from in his design.

This made me wonder if others with engineering skills might have similar ideas for enhancing or personalizing LinnStrument, or even selling alternate parts as Chris does. To help any such efforts, I've posted engineering files on my site for the following parts for both LinnStrument and LinnStrument 128:

  1. Wood sides
  2. White playing surface
  3. Top panel
  4. Chassis bottom

To get the files, visit my site's LinnStrument Support page and on the left side under the heading "About the Design", click "Engineering Files".

What could you do with these? For example, make a white LinnStrument with white top panel and white side pieces as show in the picture above.

Or or make wood sides from burled walnut...

...or curved sides in light maple...

...or design a synth that bolts on to the right side, or a dock for an iPhone or iPad running synth apps...

2) Why did California spawn so many synth makers, and so many collaborations between them?

The Californians: Tom Oberheim, me (Roger), Dave Smith, Jaron Lanier, David Wessell, Keith McMillen, John Chowning, Max Mathews

I recently participated in an article for the UK's Music Radar, asking the question "What is it about California that spawned so many synth makers, and also so many collaboration between them?

It's an interesting article. Click here to read it.

3) LinnStrument Performance: Natalie Epstein-Hogue at Boston City Hall

LinnStrumentalist Natalie Epstein-Hogue sent me a link to a video of her recent performance at Boston City Hall. I like how her subtle control of touch expression creates some beautiful sonic textures. Click here for the video.

4) Next LinnStrument Zoom call is tomorrow, Tuesday July 1

The next First-Tuesday-Of-The-Month-LinnStrument-Zoom-Call is tomorrow, Tuesday July 1 at 10 am California time. All are welcome-- LinnStrument owners or those interested in LinnStrument. I'm happy to answer questions from potential buyers or newbies, and interesting discussions often ensure between owners about tips, techniques, specific synths, or editing the source code.

To get the Zoom meeting link, click here or click "Monthly Zoom call with Roger" from the LinnStrument Support page. I hope you can join the meeting, if not this one then on any future first Tuesday of the month at 10 am California time.
