Hello from Roger Linn--

Here are a few items of possible interest to LinnStrument owners or enthusiasts.

1) New LinnStrumentalist Videos

First, here's a video from guitarist and LinnStrumentalist Yoel Genin, whose YouTube channel is "Shewesmo". I like how he creatively incorporates odd time signatures and elements of Turkish music into his style:

Here is another informal Instagram video of him playing his LinnStrument 128.

Next, here's a good example of blues guitar technique by YouTuber "infiffMusic" and LinnStrument forum member "inffih". He's playing variations on John Mayer's solo in the song "Belief":

2) Tips & Tricks

Tips & Tricks

Here are some new LinnStrument Tips & Tricks, plus some old ones that you may be aware of:

Want No Overlap mode on only one split?

Setting LinnStrument's Row Offset (in Global Settings) always applies to both splits. What if you want the left split to have a unique Note Number for each pad for drum play, while keeping the fourths row tuning on the right split?

Here's a workaround that achieves that end: Set Row Offset to 5 (as in normal Fourths tuning), then set the left split to a width of 5 columns, which effectively achieves No Overlap.

Need help learning to play LinnStrument?

If you're new to LinnStrument and need help learning to play, here are some helpful links on the LinnStrument Support page:

1) Learning to play. This page has a chart of the playing surface showing the pitch of each pad, a video demonstrating how to play simple chords and scales, and a variety of helpful resources for learning to play.

2) Videos. This takes you to the LinnStrument YouTube channel. Click the playlist "Learning to play" for many "how to" videos from LinnStrument players, ranging from beginning to advanced.

3) Learn the LinnStrument video series. This series of video by LinnStrumentalist Jeff Moen presents a simple method of learning to play common chords, melodies and songs.

Want polyphonic pitch slides (kind of) in One Channel mode?

A problem with using LinnStrument's One Channel mode-- for compatibility with older non-MPE synths-- is MIDI's limitation that Pitch Bend messages must apply to all held notes. This means that if you slide one note on LinnStrument while holding another, MIDI should require the pitch slide to apply to both notes.

But LinnStrument's One Channel mode has a trick that gets around this problem. If you hold two or more notes and perform a pitch slide on only one of them, the sliding note will automatically be sent as a series of new semitone notes instead of a continuous pitch slide. This prevent other held notes from also sliding in pitch. But if only one note is held and you slide it, you'll hear the normal continuous pitch slide.

To learn more about this and other ways LinnStrument works around MIDI one-channel limitations, see the Smart MIDI page.

Want a completely custom light pattern?

LinnStrument pad lighting system permits lighting any 12-tone scale in two colors from a palette of 10 colors, intended to light the root note in one color and the other scale notes in a second color. However, some users desire a more complex lighting pattern, for example a different color for each scale note or guitar neck dots.

To do this, LinnStrument permits Custom Light Patterns, in which any pad can be independently assigned to any of 10 colors or off. To learn more, visit the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, and search for "custom light patterns"

Looking for a used LinnStrument?

If you're looking to save some money by buying a used LinnStrument, there's a helpful page called "Buying Used" under the "Where To Buy" menu on my site.

This page tells you the year that each serial number was produced, and what hardware improvements were added over the years and the starting serial number for each improvement. This will allow you to know if a potential used purchase has an older part and to make an informed choice about whether to upgrade to a new part. Then by visiting the online store you can learn the cost of that part and therefore know your total cost before purchase.

This page also invites you to register your used purchase in order to transfer any remaining warranty to you, and to get a free license for Bitwig 8-Track DAW software.

Want an instant way change Arpeggiator rate during play?

You can change the Arpeggiator rate (1/8, 1/8 triplet, 1/16, 1/16 swing, 1/16 triplet, etc.) in Global Settings. But there's also a way to instantly change this rate during play.

In Per-Split Settings, assign the Low Row to ARPEG. Now the Arpeggiator turns on only while holding the low row, most conveniently with your thumb while fingering chords with your fingers. But also, moving your thumb left or right from the position of first touch will decrease or increase the Arpeggiator's rate, stepping through its 7 values from 1/8 notes through 1/32 triplets.

To learn more, visit the Panel Settings page, Per-Split Settings tab, search for "arpeg". And to see a demonstration of this for drum play, see this "Drums & Bass" video.

Want to scroll "Applause" across the surface for the audience to see?

Turn on Global Settings, then press the highest pad in column 2 of the playing surface. It will appear upside down so that if you're holding your LinnStrument like a guitar, it will appear correctly to the audience.

To learn more, open the Panel Settings page, Global Settings tab, search for "audience messages".

Think you have a problem and need a solution?

Always visit the LinnStrument FAQ page (accessed from the LinnStrument Support page) and click the "Problems" tab.

Please don't search the web for your answer. The reason is that you'll probably get wrong or outdated information (or both) from a well-intended but confused LinnStrument owner. For example, some users in years past seem to think that doing a new sensor calibration solves any problem. In addition to this being the wrong answer, it often results in a good factory calibration being replaced by a bad new calibration. I (Roger) insure that all information on my site is correct and up to date, so please start there and if the problem persists, simply email me at the support address so I can help.

Want to turn off all lights without disconnecting power?

Simply press the Per-Split Settings and Global Settings buttons at the same time to enter Sleep mode. To return to normal operation press any pad.
