Building Habits (BH):
Starting the year right means getting into healthy habits from the get-go. Check back weekly to learn ways to help your family gear up for student success all around campus!

So...what was H.E.R.O. all about ? Again, it is a curriculum designed to deal with a reality in American schools since 1998 in a way that is healthy, relevant, empowering, and which makes a difference for the children who may find themselves in such a situation at school, the park, a baseball game, the movie theatre, etc. When an unsafe person enters their space, the children will be able to move, rather than being paralyzed by not being at all prepared for such an unsettling situation. This curriculum was presented last spring to the PTSL by one of the founders of this organization (Safe Kids, Inc.) who is a former police officer joined by another former officer, an attorney, and an educator who has experiences from the classroom through a superintendency.

This program was field-tested in both public an private schools. Unfortunately, shortly after the K-3 students were trained in a district and incident occurred at the property adjacent to the school yard where the students were at recess. The K-3 students responded while the students in Grades 4-6 were paralyzed or were unable to figure out what they needed to do.

As a person with more than 150 hours of school safety training through Indiana’s nationally recognized program, Mrs. Nagy realized there was nothing quite like this out there. The age-appropriate curriculum which does not include the words “gun”, “shot/shoot”, shooter, gunman, (etc.) is designed to minimize the powerlessness or trauma children now have anxiety over. Think about the “active shooter” incidents and the time they began. Most of us parents knew a world before then. None of our children do. In fact, there are few college students who remember that time and very few people under the age of 27 who would remember life without such activity.
National Hispanic Heritage Month starts NOW!
This month we will invest some time learning about the contributions of Hispanic Americans to our overall society and to our local community and Zion Family. Please send accounts of your family or friends who have been a blessing to Anaheim, Orange County, California, the USA, or our Zion Family. We will post these on Facebook, so photos and brief accounts would be great. We know you have these stories, Lions, so share on! Thanks.
Prayers:  For Mr. Nadeau who started chemo therapy this week and will have a stem cell transplant on Tuesday, October 8th.

Children's Ministry Volunteers Needed

Join the Zion Children’s Ministry Sunday School Team. We are looking for adult volunteers on Sundays for the 10 am worship service, to teach the Children’s Message followed by a craft or game. The Children’s message will be pre-made along with all the game or craft material. Volunteers will walk the children from the church during the Sermon to Berea Room, read the message and follow the directions for the craft or game, make sure the room is cleaned up and then walk the children back to Church to sit with their parents. All of this will be about 15-20 minutes of your time and you will receive a one hour credit of parent participation time (for Zion School Parents). We encourage you to sign up with a friend as working in a team is more fun.
