5 Ways to Join in Healthy Vision Month 2023

Join us and the National Eye Institute (NEI) for Healthy Vision Month

The theme for 2023 is Healthy Vision: A Family Focus . It's an opportunity to inspire families to team up and learn how to protect their vision together. NEI is centering this year’s campaign on caregivers of children and older adults in Hispanic/Latino families. In order to bring better awareness, NEI is sharing simple steps we can all take to protect our vision.

Here are 5 ways to get involved in Healthy Vision Month 2023:

  1. Connect families to health programs that can help pay for eye care. For example, Friends in Sight provides free vision screenings and free recycled eyeglasses throughout Southern California. Click here to check out upcoming events in your area.
  2. Check out NEI’s comprehensive web pages about eye conditions and diseases. Get up-to-date and evidence-based information about eye conditions and diseases in English and Spanish.
  3. Take advantage of NEI’s resources for older adults. As we get older, finding eye diseases early is important. Share these useful resources!
  4. For children, make eye health fun! Share these resources focused on children — like games, interesting videos about the eye, and tips for preventing eye injuries.
  5. Promote NEI's healthy vision resources. Share NEI’s eye health resources to help everyone learn how to protect their vision.

Help Support Families In Your Community

Friends in Sight is rapidly approaching the June fundraising deadline to replace our second transport van. With your help, we will make sure our equipment and volunteers can safely travel to your vision screening events.

Last December, we were able to meet the $55,000 goal to replace our first van. We need your assistance one more time before your fiscal year ends in June. This is a great way to help Friends in Sight continue providing vision services to families in your community.

The Most Common Eye Diseases Will Double By 2050

During this year's Healthy Vision Month, we wanted to share some statistics from the NIH National Eye Institute highlighting the most common eye diseases. Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Glaucoma are all expected to double in the United States by 2050.

We've helped more than 6,000

At every vision screening our volunteer doctors assess the eye health for every patient. Our findings are recorded. Over time we have detected ocular disease consistent with NEI statistics in over 6,000 patients.

As Lions here in Southern California, choosing to volunteer with Friends in Sight at vision screenings in your District will help catch the early onset of these common diseases. Together, we'll help people improve their sight and stop preventable blindness.

Working Across Organizations To Help Prevent Blindness In All Ages

In Southern California, Lions clubs have teamed up with volunteers from Friends in Sight and KidSight to offer top-quality vision screening services as dedicated partners in the fight against preventable blindness.

Both organizations share goals with the National Eye Institute to bring accessible sight screenings to families across our community and help catch common diseases.

KidSight, a program exclusive to Lions clubs like Friends in Sight, conducts extensive testing of grade school children at their schools. Our two organizations work in tandem to provide accessible eye services with the help of dedicated Lions like you. Lions volunteers are instrumental in this effort and have established their dominance in providing humanitarian vision services throughout Southern California.
