We have just wrapped up celebrating Black History Month (see Lift Every Voice and Sing below!), and are beginning the March celebration of Women’s History Month. It is also exciting that, after the historic winter storm we experienced two weeks ago, we are now only one week away from spring break and two weeks from the Vernal Equinox, the official start of spring!
There is also hope that we are rounding the corner on the COVID-19 pandemic. In Texas, we are down from the January 16 peak seven-day average of 23,006 new cases per day to the current seven-day average of 7,253 new cases a day. That's two thirds lower. About 10% of the nation’s population has been vaccinated, and more are being vaccinated every day.
These trends are very positive. But the pandemic is not over yet.
When Governor Abbot implemented the statewide mask mandate on July 2, the Texas seven-day average was 6,497 new cases a day--lower than it is currently. To continue the current positive trend, we need to continue to take safety measures.
Meridian School continues to implement the same safety protocols that we have been implementing for the 2020-2021 school year, including requiring the wearing of masks on campus, social distancing, hand washing, and sanitizing surfaces.
Together we can beat this!

Lift Every Voice and Sing
As part of our school-wide celebration of Black History Month, Meridian staff, alumni, and students from primary through high school formed a choir to sing the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing. Choir members rehearsed at home with recordings made by former primary choir director and parent Kimberly Pollini, and in Zoom sessions with current primary choir director Sal Stow, then recorded themselves singing. The recordings were then assembled by our skillful volunteer video editor John Griswell.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the choir, and especially to those who organized--not least of whom is co-executive producer and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator Monique Swain!
