The many years of flying survey mapping missions has given me the opportunity to test out several automated flight mission apps such as Pix4DCapture, Dronedeploy, DJI Ground Station Pro.
What I have discovered is that the automated flight apps limit just how much control you have over the mission such as flight speed, image capture rate and so forth.
One of the big discoveries is that of the image spacing errors. Every automated app I have tested would leave gaps between the images which means that that front overlap is not consistent.
Some flight lines were also not parallel with each other making the side overlap not consistent as well.
Below is a fixed wing flight, as flown by others, that I was asked to evaluate. The mission was not well planned out to provide uniform front and side overlap. The gaps between the images is typical for automated flight apps. The firing mechanism leaves distance gaps between images for some reason.
