Upcoming Fall and Winter Concerts performing arts
Thanks to the Berkeley community's support of the special tax known as the Berkeley Schools Excellence Program (BSEP), our 4th-8th grade students all have access to an excellent music education program, and many of them continue their musical education in high school.
Fall/Winter concerts are a great opportunity for students and families, as well as BUSD teachers and staff, to enjoy student performances at the middle and high schools. The upcoming concert schedule is here.

Welcome to the Lit Corner: Tips for Parents Boys reading
Students read every day in class, and read often with teachers. At least three times a year, teachers assess student reading levels. The reading level is determined by three criteria: accuracy (ability to read a word or sound out); fluency (the speed and flow of their voice when they read out loud); and comprehension (the ability to understand what they read). Teachers assess all of these characteristics during a student read-aloud, and are then able to determine the child's independent level. Knowing a student's reading level helps the teacher to provide instruction and suggest independent reading in a book that is "just right" for the child.

We also want students to "read wide." Reading "wide" means reading a variety of books from different genres, as well as reading a mix of fiction and non-fiction. In school and at home, students will have the opportunity to read many books at their just-right level, but it's also important to expose them to higher-level books, perhaps by reading aloud to them from a more challenging book at bedtime. It is important to remember that the most important thing is your child's love of reading and engagement with books.
