Volume 67 | April 15, 2023

Greetings, Tutors!

Spring is a favorite time of year because of the promise it brings. As frost gives way to flowers and we see more sunshine, we are reminded about the new hope Literacy DuPage extends to the adult learners in our county. Please continue to be a ray of hope for those seeking a new start this spring and beyond.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help with tutoring strategies. Be well and take care.

With gratitude and hope,

Tutor Resources

Fluency in language learning is the ability to use the spoken or written form of the language to communicate effectively on a range of topics. Activities that focus on fluency have students produce language, that may have flaws, but is comprehensible. In contrast, accuracy refers to creating grammatically correct spoken or written language. Activities focusing on accuracy require students to produce something correctly, such as grammar or proper word form.

Fluency and accuracy are important for language learning and language use. Both help students communicate more effectively. However, just because one has accuracy, it does not assure fluency. Conversely, fluency does not guarantee accuracy.

A challenging part of a tutor's job is finding the right balance between fluency and accuracy.

Use this resource to learn more about accuracy versus fluency. These suggested instructional activities focus on building both accuracy and fluency. See these specific examples of accuracy activities and fluency activities.
