Fluency in language learning is the ability to use the spoken or written form of the language to communicate effectively on a range of topics. Activities that focus on fluency have students produce language, that may have flaws, but is comprehensible. In contrast, accuracy refers to creating grammatically correct spoken or written language. Activities focusing on accuracy require students to produce something correctly, such as grammar or proper word form.
Fluency and accuracy are important for language learning and language use. Both help students communicate more effectively. However, just because one has accuracy, it does not assure fluency. Conversely, fluency does not guarantee accuracy.
A challenging part of a tutor's job is finding the right balance between fluency and accuracy.
