MAYNEWSLETTER | 2023

It's mental health awareness month, and this year's theme is "more than enough." According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), this is to remind everyone that "no matter what, you are inherently worthy of more than enough life, love and healing."

Welcome Note

This month is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and the theme for this year is Advancing Leaders Through Opportunity. With roughly one quarter of our students identifying as Asian, our classes provide opportunities to explore leadership opportunities for themselves as well as improve their skills and access to better advance leaders that amplify their voices. Starting at the end of this quarter, students will be participating in a new program at Literacy Source: a six-week class that will help prepare them to educate their communities about Seattle's Democracy Voucher Program. In it, they will learn about the program, including multi-lingual resources, brainstorm ways they can educate their communities, and ultimately create a project proposal. Allie Azersky, who will be working with the students in this program, says: "Through this program, students will gain strategies and confidence needed to become and grow as leaders in their communities. They will support each other in their efforts, further strengthening important community networks. They will participate in local government and help their communities further influence who their elected leaders are." We look forward to seeing how our students create leadership opportunities for themselves and their community through this class!

Our June/July newsletter will be coming out in July, so you won't be hearing from us next month, but we look forward to your continued involvement and hope the first weeks of summer treat you well!

New UW Study on Pay Equity

At Literacy Source, one of the three areas of focus for our strategic plan is pay equity. We have an amazing staff and want to ensure not only that they earn enough money to afford to live in a city as expensive as Seattle, but that they are compensated appropriately for their expertise and hard work.

A new city-funded study conducted by UW concluded that yes, it's true, non-profit workers are woefully underpaid: "nonprofit human-services workers are paid 37 percent less than workers in other industries with comparable jobs." Read on to find out about possible solutions.

Goodbye and THANK YOU to our interns, Ally & Leanne!

Ally has been working in our case management program for the past six month. Apparently, she has enjoyed her time here nearly as much as we've enjoyed her: "I have been inspired by the kindness and dedication of the teachers and staff, as well as the resilience and spirit of the students." Read more here.

Leanne joined us in December to work in the citizenship program and we've been so lucky to have her! In her words, "The environment here is really welcoming and friendly. People always seem so happy to learn in classes or talk to each other." Find out more here.

GIVE BIG campaign

Give today to Literacy Source's GiveBIG campaign!

This year we are asking you to help supply our beginner computer lab class with Chromebooks so they have the technology they need to start their digital literacy journey. Digital literacy is key to gaining employment, navigating resources, working with health care providers, and so much more. We have so far raised $2,275 of our $4,000 goal to provide the class with 15 Chromebooks. Help us get there, one Chromebook at a time.

Please give for digital literacy and GiveBIG today!
