Chinese - or Lunar - New Year falls on January 29th this year, and it's the year of the snake, an augur of transformation and growth. Seattle is a great place to celebrate with a plethora of activities for all ages and abilities.

Welcome Note

The new year brings a big change for us: we've officially moved offices! Don't worry, we are still in the heart of Lake City, across the street in fact! This new space has a number of benefits: we'll be sharing the space with other community-focused organizations, there are 2 full sized classrooms, more tutoring/learning spaces (so important to keep up with the growing number of students needing our classes and programs), and we'll have updated and expanded technology capabilities in our classrooms. You can find more detailed information about our move here.

This move is yet another reminder of what an incredible team of staff, volunteers, and students we have! It has been an inspiring and hopeful way to usher in a new year by coming together to create a new home for this wonderful community. We look forward to seeing you there soon!

Student projects

With the end of each quarter comes an opportunity to celebrate our students' growing skills and accomplishments. Let's take a moment to explore our final projects for fall quarter!

We can take a sneak peak into the daily lives of our ESOL 1 students through their "Daily Schedule" projects or learn more about how our GED student approach philanthropy through their Community Service Project Proposals.

Around our fall civics theme, students in our 2/3 class showcased their knowledge by presenting on a branch of the US government, and our ESOL level 3 students wrote about a community issue and how to solve it. ESOL 4/5 students wrote essays on the similarities and differences between their countries and the United States.

We look forward to seeing what next quarter brings!

Student Spotlight: Dilia's Story

I am from Columbia but immigrated to Venezuela when I was a kid. Columbia was not safe or thriving and my mom took us to a place of opportunity where we could get ahead, and we did that in Venezuela until there was a shift in government in 1999. My husband was a professor and was beaten by the government after he was quoted in a university newspaper that questioned the government...

Board Goodbye

We want to thank Jennifer McCleary-Sills for her many years of board service. We will miss her love for quantitative analysis and her kind mentorship with the Board Fellows.

Thank you for your GenerosiTEA!

We are so grateful for the response from our community in your year-end giving. To date we have raised just over $70,000 which is a noteworthy amount, but we are still shy $15,000 of our Stay at Home Tea goal to support our classes and students. We will be counting donations throughout the month of January toward this goal. If you’ve not yet given, you can still do so.

For all our 2024 donors, donation information for tax purposes will be emailed or mailed out by the 3rd week of January.
