DecemberNEWSLETTER | 2024

December is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Month. Did you know that ~5% of the population suffer from SAD? And that it is more than 7 times more prevalent in WA state than Florida? Find more info and ways to battle the winter blues here.

Welcome Note

And just like that, another year has come and gone. A year of learning and growing together as a community. And grow we have! Last year, on average 70% of our classes were full last year; this year, that percentage has jumped to 82% (meaning the class is at registration capacity and has a waitlist). Additionally, we were taking in between 65-70 new students each quarter during registration, but in Fall it went up to 88 new students!

You may remember that our three-year strategic plan (2022-2025) included (1) healthy programming, (2) pay equity, and (3) moving offices. We'd love to tell you more about our office move, which is scheduled for January 2025. We are fortunate to have found a space just across the street, so it shouldn't present any new challenges for our students that come to our center for in-person classes. It does, however, have many benefits:

  • More space: We'll have two full sized classrooms that will accommodate 25 students per class. This will allow us to serve almost 50 more students per quarter without adding new classes. We'll also have more private spaces for individual instruction and tutoring.
  • Non-profit hub: We'll be sharing the space with other non-profits that will allow us to collaborate and strengthen neighborhood partnerships.
  • Multi-Media & Online Learning Capabilities: We'll have a modern learning center with updated technology in the classrooms that provides more support for online and hybrid learning.

We will be continuing to share with you the details as they solidify, but as we close out the year, we want to thank you for your ongoing dedication as we continue to grow and evolve. With the increased demand for our classes and programs, your support is as important as ever. We hope you have a lovely holiday season and we are thrilled to have you as a part of our community.

Volunteer Spotlight: Peter F

I am originally from the Philippines, arriving in the United States on February 16, 1974. I came to be here after my mother was contacted by the United States embassy in the Philippines with an offer of political asylum for me. (The reason for this is another story). As a student activist/organizer, I was helping tenant farmers against the very oppressive onerous practices of their landlord. Evidently, this earned me the label of “communist,” a tag that is usually fatal. I was blacklisted from the university and was kept under surveillance...

UW Partnership: Social Work Interns

For the past three years, we have had the energy and expertise of UW Social Work interns for the duration of the school year to help support students in case management and citizenship. Because Shira Rosen, our Co-E.D. has her MSW, she is able to supervise them. This year we are fortunate to have Sarah Bahten, Claire Carlson, and Natalie Luy supporting. Welcome to the team!

Have You Made Your Year-End Gift Yet?

We invite you to join our Stay at Home Tea by making your year-end donation, sipping a warm cup of tea, losing yourself in a good book, and reflecting on all we’ve accomplished together this year.

With your support, we increased the number of students served, celebrated as students earned their U.S. citizenship, obtained their GEDs, and achieved life-changing goals. Make your year-end gift today to help us continue providing these opportunities in the year ahead.

Donations must be dated by December 31st to qualify for 2024 tax deductions.
