APRILNEWSLETTER | 2023

In today's world, there are so many distractions and reasons to feel stressed. April is stress awareness month, so it could be a good time to explore de-stressing strategies that work for you, whether that is exercising, spending times with friends or family, or getting out into nature.

Welcome Note: Building Our Future

It's hard to choose what to focus on in this welcome note, since there are so many exciting things to share! We could thank YOU for making our 21st annual breakfast a smashing success, highlight the strides we are making with our strategic plan, or share the incredible projects our students created last quarter.

Perhaps our breakfast theme, Building Our Future, brings together all of these things. The student stories that were shared (you can read one below!) highlighted how our students may have very different pasts, but they all have one thing in common: they are building their future. Our strategic plan focuses on three important points: pay equity, moving our offices, and program operations, and we've been adjusting our policies and getting feedback at every level as we explore options for our future move and ensure our programming is robust.

Finally, our students are the reason we are all here. Last month we introduced their winter end-of-quarter projects, now let's take a look at the final product! Here are a few from students who felt comfortable sharing their work with the larger community:

  • GED Reading/Writing: Migel wrote an essay about the fascinating fungal disease killing bats in North America, while Javier wrote about how his world opened up when he began to learn about science.
  • ESOL: Sandar discusses her passion for Literacy Source and sewing. Yodit shares her family's passion for reading, soccer, and painting.
  • Beginning Computers: Abdulhaleem shares about his home country of Afghanistan and the challenges and joys of life in the US. Goitom highlights the many differences between his home country of Eritrea and the hustle and bustle of Seattle.
  • Citizenship: You can see Maria, Olivia, and Tegnegne's biography slide show of Susan B Anthony.

Thank you so much for everything you to support our community as we continue to build our future together.

What do you think of the new format of our newsletter?
It's great, keep it!
I preferred the old one.
I love that you're getting creative, but I'd prefer a different style.
