What We're Reading & Recommending

by Alexandra Kleeman
Alexandra Kleeman has written a debut novel that sticks to your ribs and doesn't let go.  You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine tells the story of A, a young woman living with an obsessive roommate named B. They spend most of their time watching television ads for a chemical food product called Kandy Kakes, spying on their neighbors, or stalking B's ex boyfriend. A doesn't seem too inspired by the friendship, or by her relationship with her boyfriend C, who isn't very responsive to anything she says. It's no wonder when she runs off to join a cult that reminds her "a person is just a baby ghost".   You Too Can Have a Body Like Mine is a book about a modern woman's relationship with consumerism. Delivered with a fresh voice that offers startling truths about the way we live, A's story about trying to find something to believe in will remain embedded in your psyche long after you've finished the book. I can't wait to see what Kleeman has to offer next! -- Becca Chavez, Communication and Content Associate
I'm not usually drawn to short story collections, but this book, which put Saunders on the map as a force to be reckoned with, is fantastic from start to finish. The stories are dark, twisted, and hilarious. The opening line of my favorite story, "The 400 Pound CEO" - "At noon another load of raccoons comes in and Claude takes them out back of the office and executes them with a tire iron" You get the idea.  --Len Vlahos, Incoming Owner

This was the first book of the Aspen Grove nonfiction bookclub. A concise discussion of the great issues and decisions of our country's first congress. The bookclub gave it a unanimous thumbs up. For history and political fans. Madison, Washington, Hamilton, and a host of other luminaries as they grapple with how to implement the new constitution.  --Michael Parker, Aspen Grove Store Manager

High school kids in North Carolina have a party at a small beach cottage, formerly owned by a famous American Poet where he wrote much of his poetry and is now a museum dedicated to him. The kids trash it and it gets set on fire. The judge sentences the kids to take a poetry class at a local college as well as help rebuild the cottage. Turns out the teacher is a famous poet himself. (Based on a true occurrence in Vermont at Robert Frost's old summer place.) Poetic and lyrical, this quiet yet powerful novel forces the question of pushing yourself to grow, to examine where you are and where you'll end up depending on your choices...as well as asking yourself what you really want. -- Kristen Gilligan, Incoming Owner

by Emma Cline
A bored teenage girl waits out the summer before heading off to boarding school. By chance she falls in with a Manson-like cult that has camped out in her hometown. What could go wrong? Plenty. After the liberation of sex, drugs, and rock & roll comes a horrific spate of senseless violence which impacts her adult life in more ways than she could ever imagine. The Girls is dark, disturbing, but so well-written that you'd think something like this could really happen. Because, well, it has. -- Pete Schulte, Union Station Manager

by Carol Anderson
Holy smokes did this book have an impact on me. It is an eye opening, well-researched and documented account of how our government and other institutions have, at every turn, discriminated against Black America. Even when it appears things are getting better - Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Movement, electing President Obama - obstacle after systemic obstacle are put in the path of progress. This is one of the most important books you will read this year. -- Len Vlahos, Incoming Owner

by Rob Gonsalves
A stunning, beautifully illustrated children's book where everyday scenes morph into tales for the imaginative child to discover. An autumn scene of children taking leaves gradually becomes a scene of Monarch butterflies; a picture of children snorkeling in the sea becomes a flight over a tropical island. The text is short but poetic  suggestions to imagine each transformation. This book, appropriate for ages 5 to 9, encourages the use of imagination while at the same time requiring the child to pay careful attention to the wonderful illustrations. -- Gerald Davis, Magazine Buyer
