Third graders at Arbor Station Elementary participated in a room transformation all about learning fractions on a number line. The “Gilliam 500: Math-Car Race” was designed with 10 learning stations for the students to practice their fractions on number lines.
When they walked into the classroom, the room was transformed into a Nascar themed event, designed by third grade teacher, Ms. Elizabeth Gilliam. The students had to move around the classroom, just like a race track and had different stops they had to make to “keep their energy up.”
At each location, they solved two challenge problems with their partners. The problems centered on identifying fractions on a number line and solving word problems that involved fractions and using a number line to solve the equation.
“Every now and then, I would call a ‘pit stop’ where they would have to come off of the track to come find me to solve some review problems.” This was me “fixing” their cars and giving them a tune up and once they got all the problems right, they were able to get back on the track and continue the activity, Gilliam said.”
The students had a great time showing their understanding of fractions and maybe a new love for racing!

LSES Ice Cream with a Cop
|
|
Students at Lithia Springs Elementary School were surprised by a visit from local law enforcement officers. School Resource Officer Jennifer Jones coordinated the "Ice Cream with a Cop" event to encourage positive and healthy relationships with law enforcement officers and the school community.
Students heard presentations from Officer Jones and Officer Donnie Scott, and they met in small groups with officers to ask questions and learn what it is like to have a career in the field. In addition to asking questions, students were served ice cream and they were able to meet and greet a police dog.
Principal, Dr. Tonia Small stated that, “students were very excited to see the different levels of law enforcement officers, and they were delighted to see their local officers serving them ice cream in their school.”

DCSS Teacher Recruitment Fair
|
|
In March, the gymnasium at Chapel Hill High School was filled with representatives from each school and several departments in the Douglas County School System for its teacher recruitment fair.
The fair was hosted by DCSS’ human resources department, as schools and departments look to fill open positions going into the 2022-2023 school year.
“Teacher recruitment events are essential in helping to fill teacher vacancies in the DCSS. The event affords an opportunity for principals to meet and greet educators candidates interested in working in our school district. During these events, candidates have the opportunity to highlight their credentials and it also gives our school staff the chance to spotlight why the DCSS is the best school district in Georgia,” said Kim Johnson, DCSS’ Director of Human Resources.
This year, 74 educator candidates attended the fair. Although this turnout was smaller than in years past, Johnson said principals were still able to have meaningful conversations with prospective applicants to showcase why DCSS is the best place to work in Georgia.
“We are currently experiencing a statewide teacher shortage in Georgia so we were very pleased with the recruitment fair turnout,” said Johnson. “Although the attendance at the recruitment events was smaller than in previous years, we were thrilled to meet the 74 highly qualified teacher candidates enthusiastically seeking a position with the Douglas County School System. In fact, we have already hired numerous candidates that attended the event.”

DCEF Awards Scholarships to DCSS Seniors
|
|
Thanks to the Foundation and its many generous donors, 28 seniors throughout the school system were awarded over $68,000 in college scholarships to continue their education.
DCEF has also partnered with former Atlanta Hawks player Mario West to administer his Defend the Dream Scholarship to Douglas County High School seniors.
To receive a scholarship, students filled out applications that opened at the start of the new year. Once submitted, the applications were read by donors and other reviewers, who then notified the winners.
Many of the scholarships are renewable, meaning that students will receive awarded funding each semester or year that they are in school, to assist them in achieving their academic dreams.
Congratulations to each 2022-2023 DCEF Scholarship recipient!

NMHS AVID Students Fund Free ACT
|
|
The SAT and ACT tests are critical parts of the college admission process. At New Manchester High School, juniors and seniors in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program were recently able to take each test free of charge thanks to their own fundraising efforts.
“In AVID, we look for students in AP and honors classes, but we also look for students who may be first-generation college students,” said NMHS AVID teacher Tahira Chandler. “Those students don’t have $50, $60 or $80 laying around, so we’re here to close opportunity gaps. A part of closing that gap is covering the costs of taking the ACT/SAT assessment."
For Chandler, the idea to help students raise money to take the test free of charge stemmed from AVID’s mission of promoting college and career readiness among students. Under this mission, Chandler said she strives to have all juniors take the ACT in their second semester and all seniors take the SAT during the first semester.
In order to raise the money this year, students sold baking mixes to family, friends and teachers. By the end of the fundraiser, students in the program raised over $900, which covered the cost of their tests.
These 35 students and others who registered also received the advantage of getting to have a test date at NMHS on a school day during school hours. Chandler said that being able to take tests like the SAT and ACT provide numerous advantages to students.
“It’s important just in case there are transportation issues, and also when students are in school, we know they have breakfast, and they’re getting their nourishment to stay focused,” Chandler said. “When they’re at school, we know they’re being taken care of.”
These students’ hard work did not go unnoticed. On March 25, NMHS’ ACT representative rewarded these students with a pizza party to commend them for their efforts.
“This was totally shocking, honestly,” said Chandler. “I really didn’t want them to have that stress, so I was super proud of them for all the work they put in. It was amazing, and the students were extra excited about taking the test.”
Along with students working hard to raise money for the tests, DCSS AVID Coordinator, Melissa Joe also spoke highly of Chandler, saying “Tahira is an amazing teacher. She’s unbelievable,” said Joe. “She had a real mission to have those juniors take that ACT, and she’s not the kind of person who leaves anything to chance, and she would climb a volcano for those kids.”
