The above picture is of a building leveled due to a Lithium-ion battery fire. These batteries are utilized in many industries. A lithium-ion battery that is malfunctioning or has been damaged in some way may experience “thermal runaway,” which will cause its internal temperature to quickly surpass its normal operating range and may begin to burn.

These batteries often create a chain reaction into nearby batteries, causing them to go into thermal runaway. Several “layers of protection” are available which range from the mitigation of a catastrophic fire to the prevention of a catastrophic fire.
