Spring 2025

See below for info about Spring Sports!

But first, here's a recap of the Winter Sports Season

2024-25 Basketball Season

The second season of Little Lightning basketball was again led by Coach Kyle and Coach Jessie. We had several returning players as well as some new ones who had never played before. They practiced hard twice per week and showed improvement during the season. Our team was unable to beat a good team from Williams County in Regionals on February 2, but we still consider it a successful season despite the win/loss record. In addition, the team looked sharp in their brand-new Little Lightning jerseys. Thanks to the coaches, players and parents for making this season a success!

2024-25 Swim Team

This winter we have two school age athletes on our swim team. They have done well and swam competitively, even qualifying to swim at the state winter games in Columbus. Good luck at the state meet on March 7-8 as they swim for gold at The Ohio State University!

Competitive Cheer

Our cheer team has been practicing a cheer routine since November in order to compete against other teams from across the state. They have their sights set on repeating as gold medalists in this event as they did last year. The competition will be held during Winter Games at The Ohio State University also on March 7. We have two Little Lightning teaming up with the adults to make up the squad.

STATE WINTER GAMES

The weekend of March 7-9, Lucas County Special Olympics has 11 swimmers, 16 skills basketball players, a competition cheer team, and our D1 basketball team headed to The Ohio State University for the 2025 State Winter Games. This includes 2 school age athletes competing in swimming and 2 in competition cheer. We wish them all the best. GO LIGHTNING and Little Lightning!

On March 31, 2025 our very own Lisa Martin will be retiring from the Board of DD. Lisa has been a part of Special Olympics for the past 14 years and has been a Board staff member for 33 years. She primarily works with our adult program, but feel free to join us in wishing her well in retirement!

Please join us for some cake and punch on Thursday, March 20 from 6-7:30pm at 1155 Larc Lane, Training Center, Door O, Toledo, Ohio to celebrate Lisa and wish her the best. She will be truly missed by all!

Spring Little Lightning Program

Please read the entire newsletter before registering. If you are registering online, once you hit send, you will see a “Thank You for Registering” message on your screen. This means we have received your registration.

Below is a description of each spring sport offeredAthletes can only register for one spring sport from the list, plus walking group if they wish.

Volleyball

Volleyball is one of the sports that competes during the spring season in Special Olympics (SO). Unfortunately, we do not have a school-age team at this time; however, we are looking into holding a clinic to introduce kids to the sport. In SO, two types of volleyball is offered:

  1. Traditional volleyball - uses a regular volleyball and follows typical volleyball rules.
  2. Modified volleyball - uses a bigger, softer ball and less strict rules.

We are shooting to hold this in May before school is out. We will start with the modified version. Please note they will be able to do this in addition to another spring sport as long as there are no conflicts with their other practices. Stay tuned for more information at a later time.

Tennis

Tennis is available to the Littles. They will practice alongside our adult players. In order to play on the team, athletes must possess basic skills needed to play a game such as hitting the ball over the net and serving. There will be a screening day to evaluate their skill. Practice will be held once per week at Twos Athletic Club on Cass. Once registration is over, we will send out more information.

For the beginners or those not quite ready to play on a team, we again plan to hold a clinic to teach/practice the basics. Further information will follow at a later time.

Track & Field

Track and Field is back! Interested in running, walking, or wheelchair events? Interested in mini javelin, long jump, or softball throw? You are in the right place!

Track and field events are for any skill level and offers wheelchair events as well. We are looking at Tuesday/Thursday practices this year at Bowsher High School. Please note, this still needs to be confirmed as the school is still completing their schedule. Once registration closes, we will send out finalized information.

Walking Group

Looking to get some exercise in a more relaxing and non-competitive way? Then walking group could be the answer! This is a bonus activity that anyone in SO can join! You can be registered for another sport and still be in our walking group (as long as it does not interfere with other practices). Once registration closes, location and times will be sent out.

Healthy Athletes

Healthy Athletes is a program designed to improve the athlete’s health and fitness and their ability to train and compete in Special Olympics as well as in life.

The program runs for 6 weeks and all sessions will be held at the University of Toledo Recreation Center, 2800 Rocket Dr. Sessions are on Tuesdays from 3:30 - 5:30pm. Spring session goes from Tuesday, March 11 until April 15.

The 2-hour sessions will include 1.5 hours of fitness training and a half hour of educational information on a variety of topics including nutrition, wellness and sportsmanship. Each athlete’s “fitness” will be assessed by UT Exercise Science students at the beginning and the end of the session.

Athletes must be at least 16 years old to participate and a Special Olympics athlete. Once registered, detailed information about pick up and drop off times/locations will be sent. Please note that supervision must be provided by an adult for anyone under the age of 18 or who require is per their ISP.

THERE IS NO COST AND THE SESSION IS LIMITED TO 12 PARTICIPANTS!! Priority is given to athletes who have not participated in this program before.
