Join fellow parishioners and the Respect Life Ministry in witnessing to the dignity of all human life. Our parish group gathers in St. Anthony's Chapel after the 10am Cathedral Mass for Life.

Mobilizing Against D.C. City Council Bill Deregulating Abortion Facilities

A recently proposed D.C. City Council bill would remove all restrictions and regulations from both maternal healthcare and abortion facilities, increasing risks to the health and well-being of women and girls. The Archdiocese has invited all parishes to oppose this legislation.

St. Matthew's Respect Life Ministry will lead our parish participation in a postcard-signing campaign against the bill on the weekend of January 25 - 26 . Postcards will be available in the Cathedral after Masses that weekend and at the rectory office. Questions?
Sunday of the Word of God Rings in New Small Groups Study of Matthew

Pope Francis has declared January 26, 2020  as Sunday of the Word of God. It's also the day St. Matthew's begins a Little Rock Scripture study of the Gospel of Matthew, the prominent Evangelist in our Sunday 2020 Gospel readings. Sunday sess ions begin January 26 at 3:30pm in the East Conference Room, and Monday sessions on January 27 at 7pm in the N Street Building. Participants are asked to purchase the book, “The Gospel According to Matthew, Part One” (cost is $16.95).

Join Fr. Jack Hurley and friends for a discussion of the Book of Ezekiel. This unique prophet stands out for his presentation of the absolute majesty of God. 

Weekly Encounters with the Word - Sacred Page meets Wednesdays (through January 29 ) at 7pm in the West Conference Room to read and discuss the upcoming Sunday’s readings, led by our seminarians. Celebration of the Word meets Thursdays at 7:30pm in the East Conference Room for a simple liturgy of readings, a homily by Fr. Benson, and prayers. Find links to both at the end of this email.

Volunteer Call: Spring Semester of the ESL & SSL Programs  
The Spring Semester of our English as a Second Language and Spanish as a Second Language programs begins in February. Volunteers are needed in each program to serve as instructors, with a commitment to teach one evening per week. 
Cathedral Young Adults

Looking for spiritual inspiration in the new year? Young adults of our archdiocese, including St. Matthew's own Coordinator of Social Justice Ministries, Norma Canedo, shared their thoughts and resolutions on deepening their faith.

Sunday Night Coffeehouse
Young Adults in their 20s and 30s are invited to the North Conference Room each Sunday after the 5:30pm Mass for Coffeehouse. Come for a low-key meet-and greet opportunity. Newcomers welcome!

Recruitment Sunday

Recruitment Sunday weekend for St. Matthew's four liturgical ministries - Lectors, Servers, EMHCs and Ministers of Hospitality - is February 1 - 2 . Please consider responding to the call for new ministers.

Stay tuned for details on a Saturday, February 22 server training - the first training for new servers who sign up on Recruitment Sunday. Liturgical ministers currently serving at either our English or Spanish Masses also are asked to attend.
February is Black History Month

The Social Justice Committee invites all to a screening of the documentary, “If Only We Had Listened” on Sunday,  February 16 , 2- 4:30pm in the North Conference Room. It follows a survivor of the Rwandan genocide returning to her home country to tell the story of the Marian apparition of Our Lady of Kibeho and the forewarning of the impending tragedy.

Music before Lent &
A Word about Ash Wednesday

Our Inaugural Concert Series celebrating the completion of our Lively-Fulcher organ began its 2020 events with a magnificent recital by Dr. Jennifer Pascual, Director of Music at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York City on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The program included “ Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella.”

Wednesday, February 5 - Lunchtime Organ Recital
Douglas O'Neil, Director of Music at St. Brigid Church, Xenia, Ohio, gives a 45-minute concert at 12:45pm, following our 12:10pm Mass.

Sunday, February 23 - Sunday Afternoon Recital
Benjamin LaPrairie, Associate Director of Music at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, gives a one-hour concert at 3:30pm.

St. Matthew's Schola Cantorum returns to the Sunday 10am and 11:30am Masses on March 1 after a winter hiatus. The Schola also sings on Ash Wednesday, February 26 when Archbishop Wilton Gregory celebrates the 12:10pm Mass. Our February eletter will include links to our 2020 Lenten listings of liturgies and events (English and Spanish).
Marriage Prep

Couples preparing for marriage, in addition to meeting with a parish priest or deacon, also attend a recognized Catholic engaged encounter program. Several such programs are available. One option is a free marriage prep course to be offered at St. Matthew’s from February to mid-April on Fridays, 7:30 - 8:30pm, in the East Conference Room, with a final Saturday session on April 25 , 10am - 4pm.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

First Saturday Devotions, February 1
The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration on the main altar following the 12:10pm Mass and a rosary is prayed.

First Friday Adoration, February 7
The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel following the 12:10pm Mass until 5pm. Chairs and kneelers in the chapel, located to the left of the sanctuary, are available for your use. 

A Eucharistic Holy Hour is offered monthly on the 3rd Monday, 6 - 7pm, with confessions. January and February Holy Hours are rescheduled due to the Federal holidays. Next month's will be on February 24 (this month's was on January 13 ).

The Ignatian Spirituality & Prayer Ministry at Holy Trinity Catholic Church will offer a week-long retreat in daily life based at St. Matthew's February 2 - 8 . Register by Sunday, January 19 .
