Our annual #LiveGrateful campaign returns in August!  Seven years ago we started #LiveGrateful to pour extra perks on our members to show our gratitude.  We are grateful you make your health a priority, you share it with those around you and BAC has become a part of your life.

In August we are gifting "BAC Feels Like Home" word cloud backpacks to our members while supplies last.  Members will also have a chance to sign up a family member for the month of August for free.  YES, we are including a goal setting session with that!  Plus our popular GROUP EX ROCKS game card is back this month and members can earn a "Fitness Doesn't Take the Summer Off" shirt!

Angie Kania was on a health and fitness rollercoaster.  She would get fired up and rock her health but quit for months at a time when she didn't see quick results.  The up and down was taking a toll.  Thankfully, this most recent time she changed her mindset too.  She feels great, she has lost weight and she is wearing clothes she hasn't worn in years.  Tune in Monday, August 5th to see her inspiring story during the WBKB 6pm news!  Catch the replay on our Facebook page the next day.

Want to nominate someone to be a "60 Second Inspiration" story? Email

It's been a buzzing month of BAC Rewards!  We love celebrating your fitness milestones.  We offer BAC Rewards to all members who are consistent with their workouts.  When a new member hits at least 20 check-ins during their first two months they get a "BAC Feels Like Home" t-shirt.

At 100 check-ins you get a BAC backpack and at 200 check-ins you get a BAC windbreaker!

Shakeology of the Month
It tastes like dessert, but acts like a multivitamin!

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is a multivitamin in a meal.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is NOT a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Need Shakeology at home for YOUR family? FREE shaker cup with purchase!

Healthy Living Recipe
by Kelly Lake
-1 cup dry farro
-2 tablespoons olive oil
-1 small onion, diced
-4 cloves garlic, minced
-2 cups dark leafy green (beet greens, kale, spinach, swiss chard), sliced
-Kosher salt
-Freshly ground black pepper
-¼ rice wine vinegar
-4 cups low-sodium chicken broth, heated to a simmer
-1 1/2 pounds uncooked peeled and deveined medium shrimp
-1 cup loosely packed chopped fresh basil leaves
-2 tablespoons unsalted butter
-3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

Place the farro in a large saucepan and cover with 2 inches of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered until the farro is tender but still firm to the bite, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain. In a large cast iron pan, over medium heat add the onion and sauté until soft and translucent, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the garlic and sauté for 1 minute more. Stir in the farro, along with a big pinch of salt and a few generous grinds of pepper. Add the wine vinegar and scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Stir until it has all evaporated, about 1 minute. Add a ladleful of the hot broth and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the farro has absorbed almost all of the broth. Add the dark leafy greens and continue adding ladlefuls of the broth and stirring until it's absorbed, until the farro is creamy, 8 to 10 minutes total. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper and add them to the pan. Continue to stir until the shrimp is opaque, 2 to 3 minutes, adding more broth as needed to keep the farro creamy and not dried out (you might not use all of the remaining stock). Remove from the heat and stir in the basil, butter, and lemon juice. Taste and season with additional salt and pepper as needed. Serve immediately.

August 2019
Live Grateful. It just feels better.

Many years ago, I was laying on an inflatable raft on Grand Lake with a few employees on my leadership team at Bay Athletic Club. It was our annual business strategy retreat.  Yes, we got out of the club and out to the sunshine and waves to just unplug. I sometimes get my favorite ideas when I give myself space and time to just think. Having a beautiful view and great people around me helps, too.

The word gratitude kept coming to mind.
I was grateful to have a cottage on the lake.
I was grateful for my team of  leaders.
I was grateful for our community support of BAC.
I was grateful for the courage to open BAC.
I was grateful for the lives we transform.
I was grateful that my career was fun and full of purpose.
I was grateful for the ability to run a small business.
And the list goes on.

So, I decided to make the entire month of August, every single year, a theme of Live Grateful at BAC. We pour on the love, the gifts, the gratitude to our members with no strings attached. We simply to say thank you and we appreciate you. We do. It's hard to live fit. It takes effort, time and money. We take our role in your life seriously. We love to show it.

Over the years, we've gifted fruit, coffee, shirts, boot camps, reusable shopping bags, etc. See the collage below for a look back at our annual celebrations. This year, we are going BIG!

Members will be given:
1. A "BAC Feels like Home" drawstring bag, perfect for throwing in extra clothes or shoes for the gym, or a trip to the beach or park!
2. A FREE family member added to your membership for the month! Share the love, show them why YOU want to live fit at BAC.
3. A chance to earn a "Fitness Doesn't Take the Summer Off" tank or t-shirt in our Group Ex Rocks promotion.

PS - I love the thought of living grateful in all areas of life so much, that I got the tattoo on my forearm this year. It's my daily reminder to be grateful for a new day, for the sunshine, for the rain, for joy, for sadness, for the little moments, for love, for happiness, for family bonds that are strong, for friendship that runs deep, for compassion and understanding, for heart ache, for growth, for consistency, for courage, for fear. For all of it. For it makes us who we are. I live grateful for life. I invite you to do the same.

The new school year kicks off at the end of the month. Having a good plan in place for school lunches can seem overwhelming but it doesn't have to be! I want to share some quick tips this month on how you can keep school lunches simple and nutritious and still have variety for your kids.
  1. Start with a lean meat. Choose some grilled or BBQ chicken breast (which can be eaten cold the next day), deli lunchmeat roll-ups or sandwiches, shrimp, hard boiled eggs or almond butter/cashew butter and natural jelly sandwiches.
  2. Have two 'option bins' on the cupboard where you have placed a variety of healthy snacks in one bin and some whole fruit in another. Let your child choose one thing from each bin. In the healthy snack bin you might have veggie straws, carrot sticks, whole wheat crackers, Greek yogurt, hummus cups with pretzels or guacamole cups with tortilla chips. They're more likely to eat it if they get to help choose it.
  3. Send water to school. Most juices are packed with sugar which will slow your child down throughout the day. Kids who drink enough water have been proven to do better in school and on tests. Be an advocate for your child and make sure they can have a water bottle in their classroom as well.
  4. Limit sweets or choose one special day for a treat. For example, you could send a special treat like homemade cookies or a brownie on Fridays. Processed and packaged sweets often come with food colorings, chemicals and preservatives that affect our brain and body. While our kids are growing and learning the more clear their body and mind are the better they will absorb the knowledge around them.

Encourage your child to help you pack their lunch. They will develop healthier habits earlier if you are showing them what healthy looks like and if you are telling them why it matters.

Food swap: This is something I've been doing lately and it works so great to save on empty calories and it adds more nutrition to your day. Instead of using mayonnaise or miracle whip for sandwiches, dressings or mixes like in tuna or with egg salad, try to use mustard or avocado instead. Avocado is full of nutrients, has healthy fats to fuel your brain and help your body absorb nutrients and will help keep you full for longer! Mustard is also full of nutrients and has some anti-inflammatory properties as well!

Success story: Linda Schiller is a woman on a mission. She knew that to continue living a healthy lifestyle she needed to focus on her nutrition and how to start moving her body in a more challenging way. Linda completed a 3 pack of nutrition and personal training last month and loves how she is feeling. She feels like she has better tools and has learned how to track her food. She has new habits that have helped her lose inches like tricks for increasing her water and how to curb cravings in the afternoon. Overall she is feeling more successful with her fitness and nutrition.
We offer a 3-pack of personal training for $95. You can mix and match your sessions to include personal training for fitness and/or nutrition coaching with Amanda. Email to get started.
Part of this year's #LiveGrateful campaign includes our popular Group Ex Rocks game card!  If you cross off all of the boxes you will earn a "Fitness Doesn't Take the Summer Off" shirt!  You have all of August to complete it.  Pick up your game card at the front desk.
