NETC Medical Assistant Program offers opportunity in growing field | |
|
Northeastern Technical College offers certification as medical assistant as part of the Allied Health program preparing students who want to enter a growing field.
Medical assistants (MAs) are allied healthcare professionals who work under the supervision of a physician or other licensed healthcare providers. They perform a wide range of administrative and clinical tasks from drawing blood to billing and insurance.
"Medical Assistants play an important role in the efficiency of medical offices while being able to provide direct patient care,” said NETC Medical Assistant Instructor Latonyia Hunter.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of MAs will grow 16 percent from 2021 to 2031; this growth is expected to be driven by an aging population and increasing demand for healthcare services, Hunter said.
The shortage of medical assistants is a challenge for the healthcare industry, but it also presents an opportunity for people who are interested in a career in healthcare.
The program stacks on top of the Certified Nursing Assistant and Phlebotomy programs ensuring students who exit the program are well-prepared and well-rounded in their skillsets in the starting levels in the health care profession, Hunter said.
Hunter’s second semester Medical Assistant students are wrapping up their studies in the field working in a variety of medical offices for required clinical experience.

Students nearing the end of NETC’s Medical Assistant program enter clinicals where they are separated and paired up with a health care provider, Hunter said.
Students find themselves in real-world environment in a variety of settings – in the Fall 2023 semester, medical facilities range from family practices to genetic counseling in oncology.
NETC’s medical assistant program requires the completion of 38 credit hours among 11 classes maintaining at least a 2.0 grade point average – this includes phlebotomy.
To sign up for the medical assistant program, students must:
- Complete 22 credits with a minimum grade of average of 2.0 in all 22 credits for Nurse Preparatory Certificate program.
- Submit results of annual tuberculin skin test (TST) and current Basic Life Support—Provider (BLS) by the American Heart Association.
