"Mr. Bettencourt encouraged students interested in gaining experience to reach out to people like himself and dairy producers," said Dr. Kayla Alward, Assistant Professor of Animal Science and Dairy Club Advisor. "He outlined numerous career opportunities, imparted life advice and shared his contact information with club members who may be interested in getting into the auction side of the dairy industry."

Class Field Trip to Learn About Grazing Management

Students in the PSES 4302: Range, Forage and Wildlife course, taught by Dr. Tim Steffens, Associate Professor of Rangeland and Resource Management, traveled to Fort Sumner, NM to learn about grazing management techniques.

On this field trip, students learned from cattle rancher, Mr. Ramerez, about high density grazing, soil health and water retention in the soil.

Mr. Ramerez demonstrated how he uses Sensehub Vencel; a virtual fencing technology that makes it easier for him to rotate his cattle.

"What Mr. Ramerez has done with a pretty severely degraded ranch in the short time he has been there is truly remarkable," said Dr. Steffens. "He still has a way to go before it will reach its potential, but he is well on the way, and the innovations he has used to manage natural processes in an economical way will be an example for many to follow in coming years. To find someone so willing to share their knowledge and demonstrate how it can be applied and adapted to their own situation is a wonderful resource to have available, and I am truly grateful that I was able to finally get there, and plan to be back to see his further progress."

WT Collegiate Farm Bureau Attend Regional Meeting

WT Collegiate Farm Bureau Officers and Dr. Nate Wolf, Assistant Professor of Agricultural Education and Leadership, attended the North Region, Collegiate Farm Bureau Regional Meeting, held at Texas Tech University School of Law from Sept. 20–21.

While at this meeting, students learned about careers in agriculture law, how to prepare for law school, and Texas Farm Bureau updates on legislation.

"Attending the regional meeting provided valuable insights into agricultural law and policies," said senior Agricultural Business and Economics major, Oaklynn Recker, and WT Collegiate Farm Bureau Officer. "It also highlighted the important role we as students play in advocating for, and supporting agricultural producers to ensure their voices are heard and their interests protected."
