Share the Plate
Going forward with Lilith Fund
Lilith Fund, the oldest abortion fund in Texas, is our Share the Plate recipient for September. It has been forced to pause direct funding of abortions while it evaluates the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court's summer decision in the Dobbs case and Texas laws that have made almost all abortions illegal in the state.

As of August, Lilith Fund is offering direct financial assistance for non-abortion reproductive healthcare, including ultrasounds, screenings, contraceptives, counseling and more. The Fund also is assisting Texans who are traveling out of state for care. The group continues to operate its hotline to provide information to callers and continues to build reproductive justice programming in compliance with the law. You can learn more at lilithfund.org.

You can contribute to Share the Plate during Sunday services or donate on our website. All checks and envelopes marked “Share the Plate” and half of all undesignated cash during the services will be donated to recipients. Or go to https://www.liveoakuu.org/community/donate/

The Social Justice Ministry Team in August selected Share the Plate recipients for the last four months of 2022. The other nonprofits selected are Hospice Austin (October), Hope Alliance (November) and Lone Star Circle of Care (December).

Special Notices
Homecoming/Water Ceremony This Sunday
The Water Ceremony, sometimes called "Water Communion" is a tradition in Unitarian Universalist churches, held at the end of summer. At Live Oak, it represents and sacralizes how our individual journeys are brought together and become a well of experiences and ideas that we, as an intentional religious community, may all draw from. On Sunday, please bring a small sample of water from your travels, your backyard hose, kitchen sink -- or maybe some of this glorious rainwater we're now getting.

This Sunday is also referred to as our "homecoming service" when we gather together after many of us have been traveling, going to camp, etc. This will be Rev. Joanna's first Sunday back after her sabbatical, and it is our first indoor water ceremony since 2019 - quite the Homecoming!

1st Meeting - LOUU Pagan Discussion Group
Calling all Witches, Pagans, Druids, Oh my, Let's Meet!
At long last, the first meeting of the new LOUU Pagan Discussion Group is set for Sept. 13! If you have the Moon in your blood, the Earth in your soul, and stars in your eyes, be welcome.

This first meeting will be devoted to getting acquainted and figuring out our goals, format, and meeting schedule. This group is geared toward adults of all or no genders as well as any age, level of experience (or none!), or tradition that meshes up with the 7 Principles. Possible activities include book discussions, workshops, rituals, meditations, and a lot more.

There will even be treats. Witches and cookies, who can resist? We'll meet in the Live Oak UU Library at 7-8:30pm on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

58 Days Until the Great VoteForward Mail Out
Join us September 11 and help remind Texans to vote November 8.
There are 58 days left to prepare VoteForward letters for the October 29 national mail out, and there are 884,822 Texas voters who may not receive one of these letters unless we get more ready! We will meet again September 11 after the service to work on VoteForward mailings. Print your own set of letters at home and bring them September 11, or come help fold, stamp, address, and seal letters someone else has written. Every bit helps and many hands make light work! We will provide blue pens, stamps, and envelopes; just bring your willingness to spur more Texans on to the polls November 8. To learn more about VoteForward, check out the website.
8/21 Board Meeting
Here's a summary of the meeting and a link to the draft of our minutes (not yet finalized).
A few board members were sick or injured, therefore unable to attend. This meant there was no quorum, so no votes were able to happen the day-of. Jon Durbin spoke to the Board to explain the history and purpose of the Endowment Fund. Rob Sartin spoke to the Board about the Boy Scouts sponsorship details. All other discussion matters from the agenda are postponed until the next Board meeting.

Due to the timeliness of some voting items, the Board voted online via Google Forms the following week: Homeless Encampment Policy approved unanimously; Stewardship Committee Charge approved 4-1; Community Ministries Guidance Document approved 4-1; Boy Scouts Sponsorship approved unanimously. The Board also rescheduled the Board Retreat for October 22.

Julia Mitschke has resigned from the Board, effective immediately. The Nomination committee has nominated Sue Buckley to serve as a Trustee in her place. The Board will vote her in next meeting.
