Will to Meaning
Rev. Lee Legault

Life requires us to make sense of difficult times, large and small. We have all been through a collective trauma with the pandemic. Victor Frankl—Austrian psychiatrist, philosopher, and Holocaust survivor—offers a framework for making meaning constructively in the most difficult of circumstances. Let’s reflect on how our thinking can transform our reality and set us free.

Lee works as a hospital chaplain at Ascension Seton Medical Center of Austin. She was ordained as a UU minister in September 2022 by Live Oak and First Austin Unitarian Universalist churches. She practiced law for 15 years before heeding her call to be a different kind of counselor.

Share the Plate
Muslim Community Center offers rent help
Our Share the Plate recipient for August is the Humanitarian Assistance program at North Austin Muslim Community Center. It provides about $10,000 a month in rental assistance to qualified applicants, some of whom are refugees. You can learn more about the Center and its supportive services at namcc.org.

You can contribute to Share the Plate during Sunday services or donate on our website. All checks and envelopes marked “Share the Plate” and half of all undesignated cash during the services will be donated to recipients. Or go to the Donate link on the Live Oak website’s home page. Use the drop down menu to designate your donation for “Share the Plate”.
A Few Words from the Minister
Rev. Joanna will be on sabbatical through August 31. During this time, we will be sharing some of her writings.

Women's Labyrinth Group on Zoom
Sunday, August 14, 6:30-9 p.m.
We gather for a sharing circle and a finger labyrinth walk to celebrate First Harvest/Lughnasadh, a time of hope and fear when things begin to ripen but the harvest is not yet gathered in. The harvest may be a creative endeavor, a work project, or a personal change. Our task is to nurture and protect the commitments we have made to bring our crops safely to harvest. The group is open to women high school age and older. If you need a copy of the labyrinth graphic, contact: Linda Webster (lilithfree2@gmail.com) Zoom link: https://link.liveoakuu.org/Womens-Labyrinth

SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY NEWS
"Who You Gonna Call?"

HELLO FRIENDS! Abortion still happens even when it is illegal. The urgency becomes how to keep it accessible and safe. One solution pre-Roe was the 1969-1973 Chicago underground abortion service called “Jane” from “IF YOU NEED HELP, CALL JANE”. A group of courageous women organized and provided safe and inexpensive abortions to over 11,000 women. As one member of “Jane” said, “I hadn’t had so much as a speeding ticket. But abortion really was the front line, it was where women were dying” so she decided to do something. While not doctors, “Jane” members became trained to provide dilation and curettage abortion, with the focus on privacy and safety. A client of “Jane” wrote that they “helped me sort this whole thing out. I felt that Jane was really saving me”. Eventually, seven “Jane” members were arrested but with the 1973 ruling of Roe v. Wade, their charges were dropped. While the “Jane” option was particularly gutsy, what strategies can we develop until this is finally turned back around?

Your Green Bag Shopping List
It’s time to grab your green bag or any bag and help feed our neighbors.
Bring food and other items for Hill Country Community Ministries (HCCM), our Fresh Food for All partner, to church and leave them in the narthex. Some of the highlighted canned items are green beans, tuna, spaghetti sauce, corn, peaches, peanut butter, jelly, fruit cocktail, apple juice. The whole needs list can be found here.
HELP DISTRIBUTE FOOD TO OUR NEIGHBORS
Live Oak Church will be distributing food to our neighbors at Fresh Food for All and need volunteers to help
This month, on Friday, August 19th, Fresh Food For All participants will be able to select their own produce (Farmer's Market style), instead of having the prepackaged produce placed in their car trunks. This means that we will no longer need volunteers on Thursday to sort the food but need more volunteers on Friday to help filling bags, with directing traffic, weighing the food, and helping people carry food to their cars. If you can help anytime on August 19th between 8:30 and 11AM, RSVP to Donna Durbin at: HCCM@liveoakuu.org

LOUU Voting Pledge Card Now Available
Let's be a 100% voting congregation!
The Live Oak voter pledge card is now in circulation. Look for the cards and the return box in the lobby each Sunday. We want to document how many registered voters, VDRs (Volunteer Deputy Registrars) and pollworkers we have at Live Oak. Those under 18 can sign too on the "I will vote when I'm eligible" line.
