Phoenix Rising
Barbara Rausin
The myth of the glorious Phoenix, the Firebird, rising from the ashes of its former self or from the flames of devastation is attributed to ancient Egypt. It was thought to be a sacred bird associated with the sun god. In subsequent centuries other cultures—Greek, Roman, Chinese, Japanese and Hindu among others were drawn to the symbol and brought different meanings to it, but rebirth or regeneration dominate.  The pandemic caused world-wide devastation and now it is our challenge and opportunity to determine how our individual Phoenix rises.
Barb Rausin first came to Live Oak on its first day in the El Salido location and soon realized that she had found her first ever church home.  She came looking for community, not religion, because she had already adopted principles of zen, wicca and pacifism. What a joy to have these and so many others honored by this loving congregation.
Barb’s family is small but precious: daughter Jen, son Eric, his wife Krista and their children Arielle and Kai. None of them are local but always close at heart. Barb has lived in many places and has a widely diverse work history, starting at age 16 in Pacific Tel & Tel, 17 years in the fashion field as a retail copywriter, advertising manager, reporter for WWD. Then 12 years as co-founder, co-manager of Exportations, 15 years with diverse roles in a Fortune 500 computer corporation, years as a realtor in 3 different states…and the list goes on.

Share the Plate
Help support a place of retreat for UUs.
Live Oak’s Share the Plate recipient for July is UBarU, a UU camp and retreat center near Kerrville. Some of our members have enjoyed UBarU offerings for years but if you haven’t, check out the opportunities at this 142-acre property. There are e-events, summer camps for kids and teenagers, adult retreats just ahead in October and a Star Party coming up on Labor Day weekend. It’s a place for UUs and friends to play, learn and feed the spirit. Learn more at www.ubaru.org.

To help support UBarU, go to the Donate link on the Live Oak website’s home page. Use the drop down menu to designate your donation for “Share the Plate”.

Special Notices
Live Oak Church will be distributing food to our neighbors at Fresh Food Friday and need volunteers to help.

Some of the “regulars” will not be available this month so help will be greatly appreciated at both activities.

* Thursday, July 15 @ 1:00 p.m. to approximately 2:30 p.m. food needs to be separated into smaller quantities for distribution. Meet at Hill Country Community Ministries, 1005 Lacy Dr, Leander, TX 78641
* Friday, July 16 @ 8:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Live Oak parking lot. This is when we distribute the food to our neighbors. Volunteers are needed to set up, direct people to the drive through area, collect client information, and place food in the client’s trunk. You do not need to remain the entire 2 & 1/2 hours. HCCM has asked for 7 people for each activity. We are asking you to please let us know if you will be able to participate in either activity, so we know if we have enough or too many people. To RSVP or for any questions please contact Donna Durbin at: HCCM@liveoakuu.org

Save the Date - Saturday, Sept 25
Mark your calendar right now for an all day Recovery and Healing Retreat, sponsored by the Healthy Community Team, on September 25. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for this guided retreat that will help us to process our experiences from the past year, heal as individuals and as a community, and look forward to the future. More details will come later, but we're hoping everyone can be there, so "save the date" now!

Let's get together for a BYO picnic and games. July 11, 4:30-7:00 PM. Live Oak Grounds. Bring your own food, drink and games. Masks required to enter the building. Hosted by Faith Development.
Live Oak UU Covid-19 Policy
Update for the Summer
For Live Oak members planning on using church grounds over the summer for meetings or gatherings the following is the Covid-19 policy:

Outside: Groups can gather without masks. Again please be cognizant of others with their comfort levels about social distancing and masks.

Inside (schedule with Administrator!):
  • Groups ≤ 20 members in size can meet without masks as long as all members consent.
  • Groups of more than 20 members should wear masks. Masks should be worn in common areas such as hallways or bathrooms as people may come into contact with others not necessarily in the meeting.
  • Groups with children should always wear masks.

Again these are temporary restrictions over the summer, and we will continue to relax restrictions with updates from health authorities. Read more
