Carreno wins Gold Cup and Manitoba Matron
Puts on riding clinic with different styles to win 7 of 15 races
Myopic and jockey Jorge Carreno on their way to victory in the 65th running of the $40,000 Gold Cup on Tuesday night at ASD for trainer Robertino Diodoro. (Jason Halstead photo)
Jockey Jorge Carreno continued to put on a riding clinic this week at the Downs, winning seven of the 15 races run and two of three stakes to increase his win total to 59, putting him 19 wins up on Renaldo Cumberbatch. And he did it with different riding styles.

Carreno kicked off his win spree aboard Spun Line ($3.80) in the second race on Monday night with a wire-to-wire victory in the 41st running of the $40,000 Manitoba Matron for trainer Jared Brown and owners Ira Donald and Kane Kachur. He then won the fourth race with a determined rally aboard Giddy Up Zoey ($4.50) for trainer Ryan Desjarlais before reverting back to his catch-me-if-you-can tactics to win the fifth race with Dixie Mo ($7.90) for trainer Mike Nault and the sixth aboard Marketing King ($5.80) for trainer Jared Brown.

Carreno continued to win on Tuesday with a wide-speed victory aboard Harrykeepthechange ($5.80) for trainer Jared Brown, but saved his best riding performance of the week for Myopic ($5.50) and trainer Robertino Diodoro in the seventh race, the 65th running of the $40,000 Gold Cup.

Using just enough horse to get to the lead in the traditional 1 1/8-mile championship race for older horses at the Downs, Carreno made sure fellow speed horse and Elite Mercedes Stakes winner Itsthattime couldn’t pressure him early with a tight ride outside that one into the first turn.

Holding a short lead to the final turn, Carreno saved just enough horse for Century Mile shipper Quinto Sol, who came barreling after the favourite midway through the final turn for trainer Tim Rycroft and jockey Enrique Gonzales, duelling to the sixteenth pole with that game rival before drawing out to win by three-quarters of a length.

Manitoba-bred McKague ran one of the best races of his career for trainer Carl Anderson, rallying to finish third under jockey Stanley Chadee Jr., a length behind Quinto Sol and a nose in front of Itsthatime and Chavion Chow in fourth.

The Gold Cup was one of the best races of the year, and the first victory for Myopic and his ownership partners Rick, Clayton and Lana Wiest, Arnold Bennewith, Randy Howg, R6 Stables, Gary Kropp and Norman Tremblay, since breaking his maiden and running second in last year’s Manitoba Derby and Canadian Derby.

Carreno finished out the week with a come-from-behind victory aboard Mermaid Kisses ($13.30) in the first and only race run on Wednesday, and the riding clinic was complete, but he didn’t get all the thunder. Jockey Antonio Whitehall stole a little of his own.

Whitehall scored a game victory aboard Lucky Chuckee in the 53rd running of the $40,000 J.W. Sifton Stakes for 3-year-old Manitoba foals on Tuesday night. Trained by Shelley Brown for herself and ownership partners Anne Champion and breeder Larry Falloon, Lucky Chuckee forced the pace outside a game Bettermakethattwo and dueled with that one to the sixteenth pole in the 1 1/8-mile race before drawing off to win by 2 3/4-lengths.

Bettermakethattwo gave it everything he had for trainer Larry Cizik and owner Janice Braiden, but Lucky Chuckee was better on this day.

The bay Manitoba-bred gelding by Bird Song-Blazing Sasha by Langfuhr has now earned over $70,000 from a record of 3-0-1 in seven starts including victories in last year’s CTHS Stakes and Buffalo Stakes.

Well done Chuckee!

Here’s our second in the series honouring jockeys who topped the leaderboard in the early years of the Downs. This time, it’s a Winnipeg boy who bested all the others. Tommy Stadnyk won the jockey title in 1959 (49 wins), 1960 (49 wins) and 1961 (59 wins) – with all three seasons being 42 days long. He easily surpassed Hugo Dittfach to become the Downs all-time leading rider. (Assiniboia Downs historical photo)

Top NFL Picks by TravyFootball: Week 2
Bengals over Cowboys (Sunday afternoon): HOW ‘BOUT THEM COWBOYS! The worst performance of last week goes to Dallas, and that's saying something because there were a lot of bad performances in week one. The only team in the entire league to not score a touchdown, the Cowboys were dominated by Tom Brady and the Bucs. To make matters worse, starting QB Dak Prescott left the game late in the 4th quarter with an injured thumb. He had surgery on Monday and is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

Enter Cooper Rush, a name I bet 99.9% of people reading this haven’t even heard of, and for good reason, because he really isn’t a great option for Dallas to go with over the next few weeks. I expect them to make a few calls and acquire another QB via a trade.

Joe Burrow had the worst game of his career last week throwing four interceptions, and despite the fact that the Bengals revamped their offensive line in the off season, they still gave up seven sacks. They had a chance to win this game but a blocked extra point at the end of regulation time pushed it to overtime where the Steelers got the victory. Maybe the Bengals are experiencing a little bit of Super Bowl hangover, but I don’t expect Burrow to have another game like that as long as he can stand up straight.

49ers over Seahawks (Sunday afternoon):  After playing in monsoon like conditions while in Chicago, the 49ers will return to sunny California for their home opener against the surprising 1-0 Seahawks. Trey Lance had a subpar performance against the Bears, and it has already got people talking about how much leash is given to him before considering making the switch back to Jimmy G. I personally think it’s way too soon to go down that road, but Lance definitely has to start proving why he was the 3rd overall draft pick last year. Seattle defeated the Broncos on Monday night thanks in part to some questionable coaching and two goal line stops on 4th down. They weren’t overly impressive, but in this league, it’s hard to get wins, so you take them when you get them.

Lions over Commanders (Sunday noon): Commanders QB Carson Wentz might be the most erratic quarterback in the entire league. When he throws the ball, anyone on the field is in play to catch it. It might go to a receiver, it might go to a linebacker, it might go to the running back, it might hit the referee in the head, or it might be caught by one of the guys holding the yard sticks on the sideline. Literally everyone is an option. Despite all of that, the Commanders held off a late charge by the Jaguars to get the 28-22 victory last week. They now will travel to Detroit, who also had a late rally, but fell a little short against the Eagles. The Lions seem to be picking up where they left off last year, where despite their terrible record (3-13-1) they put up a fight in a lot of games. Lions QB Jared Goff has to learn to play well for an entire game, not just when they are behind on the scoreboard.

Bob recently sat down with Dr. Norm Elder to chat about his career at the Downs, which dates back to the mid 1960s. At one time Elder owned and trained race horses, then he got into the breeding end of the sport. Three and a half hours into their conversation, Bob realized they had only scratched the surface of Elder's amazing career. Click here to learn everything you wanted to know about ‘Doc’ Elder, but were afraid to ask.
