They wanted her and her sisters to become literate in Yiddish, and thus began Gela's love affair with our wonderful ancestral language. She attended Hebrew/Yiddish school until the age of 12, where she studied and perfected Yiddish and Spanish.
After leaving Cuba in 1961, she finished high school and college, receiving her MSW in Clinical Social Work from Loyola University. Since retiring in 2014, Gela has been teaching Yiddish classes to others who want to learn.
Class requirements:
- attend class regularly
- practice a little bit of Yiddish each day (light homework)
-
You must purchase the textbook -- Colloquial Yiddish by Lily Kahn (Click here to purchase on Amazon).

The United States played a vital role in saving Europe’s intellectual elite from the Nazis. American universities welcomed Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi, Hannah Arendt, Herbert Marcuse, Rudolf Carnap, Richard Courant, and hundreds of other physicists, philosophers, mathematicians, chemists, historians, and linguists who transformed the American academy. Yet for every scholar who survived and thrived, many more did not. Those deemed too young, too old, too conservative, too liberal, or “too Jewish” were rejected and left to face the horrors of the Holocaust. Well Worth Saving - a finalist for the 2020 National Jewish Book Award—is a harrowing account of the profoundly consequential decisions American universities made about refugee scholars during the Nazi era.
Please join us as Lunch @ 65 West welcomes Laurel Leff, author of the award winning “Buried by the Times: The Holocaust and America’s Most Important Newspaper” for this Zoom based interview and audience Q & A.
The Union League Club would want to send a special thank you to the co-sponsors of this program:
Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation - Chicago Loop Synagogue – Iowa Jewish Historical Society – Jewish Federation of Dutchess County – Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne – Jewish Federation of Peoria – Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities – Jewish Federation of Greater Rockford – Jewish Federation of Western Connecticut – Simon Wiesenthal Center – Standard Club – World Jewish Congress

Possibilities and Challenges for Refuge in Latin America During the Holocaust with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center
Tuesday, July 13, 2021
6:00 PM
Thousands of Jewish refugees spent months crossing the ocean, fleeing the Nazi regime, hoping to find safety when they reached Latin America. In total, Latin American governments officially permitted only about 84,000 Jewish refugees to immigrate between 1933 and 1945, less than half the number admitted during the previous fifteen years.
Argentina and Uruguay provided both possibilities and challenges for European Jews seeking a safe haven before, during, and after the War. Join Christina Chavarria, Program Coordinator in the Levine Institute for Holocaust Education at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, as she recounts powerful stories through an engaging visual presentation.
