Description:


Black and Brown boys and girls in our society are faced with racism daily, resulting in some cases, fear, anxiety, and even Race-Based Trauma. As an advocate for children, therapists need to be well informed about racism, social injustice, and the impact these have on the lives of the children served. Directive play therapy approaches will be presented to connect with, impart empathy, healing, and empowerment. Participants attending this play therapy workshop will be exposed to art, music and bibliotherapy. 


Objectives:


  • Define cultural humility, racism, race-based trauma and its impact on Black and Brown minds
  • Describe how children in play therapy may express awareness of cultural differences
  • State examples of transference and countertransference and how it may occur in therapy relative to cultural issues
  • Define micro and macro aggression and its effect on the therapeutic relationship  
  • Describe ways to create an atmosphere of cultural inclusion in the playroom
  • Identify10 qualities needed for therapists to advocate for social justice

Sonia Hinds, APRN, PMH-BC, RPT-S is the Founder and CEO of Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars. Founder and Executive Director of Barstow Acres Children’s Center, a non-profit practice providing children's mental health services. Ms. Hinds is trained in Child-Centered and Gestalt play therapy with Violet Oaklander (retired). Authored chapter, Play Therapy with African-American Village in text, Cultural Issues in Play Therapy, edited by Eliana Gil, PhD, RPT-S and Athena Drewes, PsyD, RPT-S. Ms Hinds received the MD/DC APT 2019 Outstanding Service Award.

Cancellation Policy:


Written notification of cancellation must be received in our office at least 10 business days prior to a training for a refund. A $25.00 cancellation fee will be deducted from the refund. There will be no refund for cancellation notification less than 10 business days.


CBPS reserves the right to cancel a training due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment. In the event of such cancellation, you will receive a full refund. 


Cancelling your Zoom meeting registration does not constitute cancellation of your CBPS session registration. Please refer to our cancellation policy in the training announcement, which supersedes all other mentions of options to cancel your registration.

The Maryland and Washington, DC Boards of Psychology Examiners Recognizes national Association of School Psychologist approval status with CBPS and grants CE hours to clinical psychologists in Maryland and Washington, DC.
