Back in the days when the station wagon was the vehicle of choice for large families, we took many Sunday drives. Back then gas was 39 cents a gallon, so we did a bit of car travel exploring. One day we ended up about 90 miles from home at The Grotto, a new adventure! The thing I remember most was the candelabra in The Grotto cave. I had never seen candles arranged like that.
Decades later I was wandering through the grounds and picked up a volunteer leaflet, and thus began my years-long journey as a Grotto volunteer.
Meeting visitors from all over, and getting to know the Grotto staff were valuable takeaways from my Grotto experience. Chatting with Fr. Jack, watching Sister Ruth on a ladder, seeing Larry's big smile, selling tickets at the Festival of Lights, working luncheons and dinners in the conference center, and meeting other volunteers and staff made my life much more interesting! Volunteering was a joyful opportunity!!!
And each time I came I checked out the candelabra on The Grotto altar ... the candles were always lit!
