Happy 4th of July weekend!

I pray that you celebrate safely and well this important day in our nation's history. May we be a faith community committed to freedom and justice for all, and continue working toward that dream.

Did you know you can watch the Ocean Beach Fireworks virtually this year, recorded from years past? Here is the link for those of you who are interested: . I'm looking forward to watching along with you!

This Sunday, the message will focus on "Faith and Nation." With so much going on in our world, what does Jesus say about what belongs to the rulers of earth and what belongs to the ruler of heaven? We see many faith communities respond to the topics of "Faith and Nation" in a variety of ways. How is  our  community of faith called to respond, as we seek to follow Jesus? I'm looking forward to our time together.
Welcome Rev. Dr. Hannah Ka as our Pastor of Discipleship!
Rev. Hannah brings experience in two very important areas that will help First Church in our vision of being one church with many different expressions in many different locations.  She has been involved in new church development and small group ministries.

I am excited about the possibilities that can come in this new day and with our new pastor!  Welcome her, keep her in your prayers and see what God can do!

Live-streaming from OB (soon)
I am grateful that the Trustees approved funding for the installation of live-streaming equipment and needed AV system upgrades on the OB campus. These funds came as part of the estate gift of Wayne Lee Brown, and our church is incredibly grateful for his generosity! Kevin Miller, who serves on staff, and Jerry Tucker, a stellar volunteer and Water's Edge band member, are working on making the designated improvements.

We do not currently have a 'start date' for live-streaming in OB, since some of the equipment is on backorder due to high demand. Therefore, we will begin by updating the AV system, and move as quickly toward live-streaming install as circumstances allow. We will begin live-streaming from OB as soon as that capability comes available, but are also grateful that nothing prevents us from live-streaming in Mission Valley as long as that is needed. What a gift it has been to be a multi-site ministry in this season! As the project develops, we will share updates with you and information on how to continue to view the livestream for services on both campuses as desired.

Eventual Return to OB Campus - Donations Needed!
As we prepare for a safe return to the OB campus, there is much work being done by a Church Council Task Force, members of the Water's Edge Leadership Team, and church staff to get our recently approved plan approved by the Annual Conference. We are also watching the currently rising Covid 19 cases very carefully, and are committed to doing no harm. The likely first step will be small group gatherings of 10 people or less meeting on campus, wearing masks, social distancing, etc. We don't know yet when this will be, but will certainly let you know when the conditions are right.

As we move forward on sanitation plans and preparations, we have a request of you: would you plan to donate one bottle of hand sanitizer and one carton of sanitizing wipes per person for our return-to-campus effort? If you are able to do this, we would be incredibly grateful, as ordering these supplies has become very challenging. Again, even though we don't know when small groups can begin meeting on campus, if you are able to have this donation on hand to bring with you when that time comes, we'd be so grateful. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me at

Prayers for good health, peace, and for our connection through the power of the Holy Spirit, which continues to sustain us in this season and always.

Greatest need this week: Toiletries
Updates from OB Food Bank
We are successful in achieving our mission. Nobody who has come for food on a distribution day has been turned away empty-handed. The OB Emergency Food Bank is serving between 140-200 people a week.

The greatest need right now is Toiletries . The easiest way you can help is to click on the button "Order on Amazon". You will find a list of needed items and can choose what you like to donate. Thank you for your support! Please  email Pastor Jessica  if you have questions about how to donate to the OB Emergency Food Bank.
