Liveaboard Safety

Since the tragic fire aboard  Conception  in California this summer, divers' awareness of safety issues has been heightened while sleeping on a boat. Boarding  Red Sea Aggressor  in Egypt this fall, our group actively participated in the safety briefing, checking out the forward escape hatch first-hand and asking the uncomfortable questions of "what if?". When that ship caught fire just three weeks after our charter, resulting in the death of one diver, we were shaken.

Our hearts go out to the victim's family, to her fellow divers aboard who survived such a harrowing experience, and to the crew of the ship, all of whom we know and admire. We want answers - how could this happen, especially so soon after   Conception? What could have been done to prevent the loss of life? How can we feel safe sleeping on a liveaboard in the future?

Many of the answers we seek are necessarily slow to be revealed. It may be months before the investigation concludes, determining definitively how this fire started, if it might have been prevented, and if systems or procedures were in any way inadequate. We're left with the small hope that, just perhaps, all of our collective awareness might have mitigated this tragedy even a bit. A single fatality is one too many, yet it could definitely have been worse.

Your safety comes first to us. Last week at the diving industry's DEMA Show in Orlando, UnderseaX owner Greg Hamman met with each of our liveaboard vendors to determine what measures can be taken to prevent future tragedies. Each and every operator had already tightened procedures around charging batteries and devices, safety briefings and muster drills, night watch, and testing and interconnecting smoke detectors. Some are going further, with fire suppression and additional safety equipment.

As the chartering agent, UnderseaX will continue to press operators on safety, right down to boat design and construction. These latest developments underscore the need to choose the best vessel for our group in each destination, regardless of the name of the fleet. We can also inform you, our guests, about safety considerations on every vessel we book.

As liveaboard and even day boat divers, we can all refuse to let our guard down, continue to engage in safety drills, insisting to be shown escape routes and safety equipment with our own eyes. We can  demand that crew and fellow guests likewise never become lax with the passage of time about rules and recommendations around electronics and other fire hazards.

Please feel free to call us at any time on +1-858-270-2900 or reach out by e-mail to info@UnderseaX.com if we can answer any questions or address any concerns.

Fire can never be prevented entirely, and is especially dangerous on a boat. With heightened readiness, choices, and procedures, we can continue to dive safely from both land and sea.

New! BCDs Week Bahamas:
Bears, Cubs, and Daddies on San Salvador Island

Bears, Cubs, and Daddies will dive the Bahamas next year! Locally-owned  Riding Rock Resort  is busy continuing to upgrade their property to welcome us back, and before the end of the week you'll thank bartender Peaches with  a bear hug  for the fritters and her rum punch with bitters. All meals are included so get ready for cracked conch, conch chowder, those tasty conch fritters and other home-style island favorites. This is the  authentic Out Island Bahamas, not a Nassau mega-resort.

Diving here is excellent for both new and experienced divers. You can even complete your open water certification on this trip. Three dives a day are included for five days, along with two dives on Friday - 17 dives total. Almost every dive is along the wall, so you and your buddy can choose a depth at which you are comfortable, or follow the guide or Instructor.  In the clear water you'll quickly get used to the resident Caribbean reef sharks and begin to recognize individuals. Divers who've learned to swim slowly with an eye to the blue and let animals come to them often get lucky and are rewarded with a sighting of a hammerhead or even dolphins!

Bahamasair now offers non-stop service to San Salvador Island (ZSA) directly from Miami as well as via Nassau. The ocean is right outside the balcony of your room, and we've booked both of Guanahani Divers boats to accommodate up to 26 men on this very special Gay Scuba week.

E-mail us today to reserve your space!

New! Kona For Women Only:
Lesbian Scuba Diving on the Big Island of Hawai'i

Say Aloha to a Hawaii scuba vacation in 2020! Make friends with green sea turtles and yellow tangs, explore lava tubes and swim throughs, and marvel at the magnificent manta night dive.

Non-diving partners and friends love joining our resort-based Kona vacations, and your afternoons are free to explore the island. Snorkel in the shallows and spot our state marine fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a, even if you can't yet say its name!

Royal Kona Resort is ideally located along the walkable Ali'i Drive waterfront close to many good restaurants and shops and just a block or so from our dive operator, Jack's Diving Locker. The diving is easy enough for beginners, yet still interesting for experienced divers with a sharp eye for the unique endemic Hawaiian fish species.

Our private "For Women Only" boat,  Kea Nui, is limited to just 20 divers, so don't miss out.  E-mail us now so we can hold your space!
