HICP Five Threats Series, Ransomware Attacks - March 26 or 28
The HICP: Five Threats Weekly Series hosted by the 405(d) Initiative presents the second threat in a series of five -- Ransomware Attacks -- at noon on March 26 or March 28. Ransomware, as defined in the HICP Publication and the HHS Ransomware Fact Sheet is a type of malicious software distinct from other malware; its defining characteristic is that it attempts to deny access to a user’s data, usually by encrypting the data with a key known only to the hacker who deployed the malware, until a ransom is paid. Ransomware threats may incorporate tactics or techniques that are the same as or identical to other threats. For example, e-mail phishing attacks, the first of the five threats identified in the HICP publication, may lead to the installation of ransomware. This 90-minute presentation will allow the community to dive deeper into this threat individually and corresponding mitigation practices. Read more on

New analysis breaks down opioid prescribing patterns in Colorado
A new report from the Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC), based on data in the Colorado All Payer Claims Database (CO APCD), helps isolate opportunities to reduce opioid use disorders in the state. While some common opioids are being filled less, the number of days supply being prescribed is often outside recommended guidelines, increasing the potential for addiction. Go directly to the report here or read an analysis by Telligen here.

Influenza activity continues: Are your patients protected?
Seasonal influenza can cause serious complications in vulnerable populations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months and older. It is not too late to get vaccinated – to help protect your patients, your staff and yourself. Medicare Part B covers the influenza virus vaccine once per influenza season. Medicare covers additional influenza vaccines if medically necessary. You may also want to recommend the pneumococcal vaccine during the same visit. Medicare covers:

  • An initial pneumococcal vaccine for Medicare beneficiaries who never received the vaccine under Medicare Part B
  • A different, second pneumococcal vaccine 1 year after the first vaccine was administered

AMA tip: Implement pre-visit planning to reduce daily friction
What’s the difference between a day where you’re floundering and frustrated, and one that runs smoothly? The answer may lie in whether your practice has implemented pre-visit planning. Consider using a visit planner to review the next day’s schedule of patients. This allows staff to prepare for vaccinations, additional tests, or room accommodations that may be necessary for some patients. Check out these resources for more information on pre-visit planning:

Know Your Legal Rights
Physician practices have rights under Colorado law that can be exercised to reduce health plan barriers to care, thanks to more than a decade of advocacy by CMS, component societies and our allies.

To help physicians and practice staff understand what those rights are, CMS has compiled countless physician protection statutes into helpful summaries and incorporated this information into a searchable members-only online database -- Know Your Legal Rights.
