Give Advocate Volunteer
Community Needs Assessment Event Needs
The May 24th community roll out of the Mental Health and Child Care Needs Assessment attracted over 50 city and elected officials, nonprofit leaders, and area business representatives. Special thanks to the  
Diamond Jo Casino   for sponsoring the event.

In late 2015, United Way and the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque partnered to take a focused look at needs and barriers to opportunity in Dubuque. The project took place throughout 2016 with the final report made available in early 2017. The goal of the assessments has been to help inform the work of those in the field, influence current programming, enhance efforts to obtain funding, and provide data to help engage policy makers. The information was used to develop criteria for United Way's New & Targeted Initiatives funding program and to launch a shared indicator pilot.

On June 7th, United Way honored volunteers at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation. In 2016-2017 United Way had 5,351 volunteers who provided 17,212 volunteer hours in our community!  

Volunteers assist United Way in numerous ways: 19 served on the Board of Directors, 23 served on the Investment Review Panel, 7 served on the Campaign Cabinet, and 109 served through the Volunteer Reception Center.

Thank you to all volunteers who attended the appreciation and thank you for your donated time.

United Way is thrilled to announce the newest members of our Board of Directors: 
  • Dan Walsh is the Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending at American Trust
  • Mike Cyze is the Director of School and Community Relations at Dubuque Community School District
  • Michelle Schmidt works at the Telegraph Herald as the Director of Promotions and Community Relations
  • Nathan Runde is an attorney from Clemens, Walters, Conlon, Runde & Hiatt, LLP.  
Their three year terms begin June 1, 2017.  We know they will be wonderful additions to our Board of Directors who oversee and assist in developing an even stronger United Way for our community. 

United Way also wishes to thank Stan Rheingans and Jennifer Clemons-Conlon who have ended their terms on our board of directors.  Stan and Jennifer are wonderful volunteers who gave a great amount of time and energy to growing our organization over the years.

Meet Jessica Jessica




United Way welcomes Jessica Bleile as the new Director of Community Building and Impact.

Jessica has a bachelor's degree in Social Work and 13 years of experience working with nonprofits in our community. She most recently worked at Opening Doors as the program director for Maria House. 

We are excited to welcome her to our team and know she will continue to lead a strong and effective team
of nonprofits, providing services to over 50,000 individuals every year.

Mental Health Pilot ProjectMental

There is no question that collaboration is a good idea, especially for social service agencies tackling difficult problems such as access to quality mental health care. United Way funded partners providing mental health-related programming have recently launched a pilot to develop shared measures for program success. To date, the partnership includes nine organizations addressing counseling services, domestic violence,  substance abuse, homelessness and disability services.

Foster Grandparent Program Grandparent


The United Way-sponsored Foster Grandparent Program in Dubuque County held its annual appreciation picnic recently to recognize foster grandparents for service in working with children and improving literacy. In the upcoming year, the program is growing the number of foster grandparents locally and establishing sites in Jackson and Delaware Counties.
