“Flowers”

by Brooksie Read-Duncan

Scripture: Isaiah 40:6-8, Matthew 6:28-30, Luke 12:27, 1 Peter 1:23-25

The flower month is May (you know April showers bring forth May flowers), my favorite month (my birthday month, LOL). This month kicked off with the first full moon, called the Flower Moon. Later this month, we will have another full moon called the Blue Moon (you know, once in a blue moon). Blue moons only occur about every 33 full moons and happen every two to three years, depending on the twenty-nine-and-a-half-day lunar cycle.

Anyone who knows me knows I adore nature. I like flowers, trees, birds, bees, the sun, the moon, the stars, and watching the cycle of this great universe God has made for us. I also love anything with water, except bad storms.

I know our God loves us, and He loves flowers. Flowers are traditionally symbols of fragility and short life. Human life is often compared to grasses and flowers, highlighting the temporary and transient nature of life on earth compared to eternal spiritual life, according to Isaiah 40:6–8.

God made us all different—different colors, races, and cultures—just like my flower beds with different species and colors all blending together to make a beautiful display. God cares for the flowers. He promises even greater care, love, and protection for humans, urging us not to be anxious about life’s needs. Symbolically, as flowers grow and bloom side by side, we as humans can certainly love our fellow man even when they are different from us, just as we are different from them. We can all grow and bloom side by side on this beautiful planet we call home and accept each other as equals. After all, we all belong to God.

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father of all, may we be like Your flowers and grow and love each other on this wonderful planet You have made for us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
