Philippians 4.12-13 I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. ¹³ I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Perspective

How many of you would be pleased with a washing machine that could last 58 years? How about a car, a washing machine, or even a relationship? My body is 58 years old. For some of you, that makes you think I am ancient; for others, that I am just a kid. Next month, I will be having the eighth surgery on my right arm, a shoulder replacement. My body might not have a medical warranty, but at least I can still get parts for it!

The call to ministry has allowed me to see people who have faced much bigger challenges than mine. I am repeatedly amazed and inspired in how our people in our congregation face difficulties.

Paul writes to the church in Philippi from prison to encourage them and thank them for sending financial gifts. Philippians teaches us how Paul believed that even if he were executed in prison for his faith, to die is to gain. Talk about perspective! Paul is willing to live or die sacrificially to spread the message of Jesus. Paul’s contentment is not dependent on his circumstances. He maintains the perspective that life is a gift which allows us to be ambassadors for God.

Next month, I will experience some discomfort. I will be stubborn. I will learn about patience, again. None of those are indicators that I lack purpose or that God is not faithful. While I will miss a few Sundays of preaching, I will not stop being thankful for the life, and even my 58-year-old body, which God has allowed me to use for a life of ministry. Philippians is not a promise of an easy road. It reminds me that God will continue to provide for me and strengthen me for the tasks of my call.

While I know I will have selfish moments, I am thankful for Paul’s reminder and the example so many of you have set for me.
