Director's Message

Dear Community Members,

The Public Health Works! Honor Roll

The Public Health Works! Honor Roll recognizes local public health workers as an essential part of State Health Commissioner Dr. James V. McDonald’s efforts to improve well-being and fairness in healthcare across New York. At the heart of every successful health initiative are the people who show up every day to protect our community. This month, we are proud to highlight one of our own.

Recognizing Andrea Whitmarsh – 11 Years of Service

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Andrea Whitmarsh willingly and tirelessly shifted her responsibilities to one of the most pressing needs of the pandemic, communications. Having received training as a Public Information Officer, along with experience in public health messaging, marketing and communications, Andrea was an excellent fit to meet the community’s insatiable demand for constant communications and information.

Thousands of people were reached, engaged with, and shared information on our Department’s primary social media platform, Facebook. Followers commented and asked questions on posts and she read and responded professionally and repeatedly at all times of the day and night. She responded to inquiries from the media, schools, business owners, hospitals, nursing homes, and so many public and private entities seeking the most current guidance and information from a local source.

She was promoted to Program Coordinator and continues to act as a member of the Department’s leadership team. As the pandemic demands lessened, Andrea took on a new responsibility, working on the Community Health Assessment and Improvement Plan. She re-engaged community based organizational partners, launched a community survey, identified new data sources, and used new data visualizations to help provide snapshots of data by topic. She provided presentations on community needs and the county’s Community Health Improvement Plan to the Department’s new staff, governing bodies, community-based coalitions and communities and stakeholders.

Andrea now regularly shares these updates and health strategies with our new staff, county leaders, and community coalitions.

We proudly recognize Andrea Whitmarsh for her long-standing dedication to our team and our goal of building healthy people in healthy communities.

Sincerely,

Linda Beers

BBQ Safety

Summer and grilling go hand in hand, but grill fires can start easily and spread quickly when the gas or charcoal grill is placed too close to any fire hazards. Learn how you can help keep your home and family safe by following our grill safety tips.

Bike Helmet Fittings and Car Seat Checks Galore!

Throughout the month of May and June, the Essex County Health Department, in partnership with Safe Kids Adirondack, continued providing bike helmets and safety education to Pre-K through 1st grade students in Newcomb, Minerva, Schroon Lake, Keene, Boquet Valley, and Willsboro CSD (all other Essex County schools were served in 2024). Each student receives bike safety education and a free, properly fitted helmet! The Essex County Health Department is partnering with all Early Head Start and Head Start sites throughout the county to provide free bike helmets and car seat checks for families during pick-up times.

Pictured here are Essex County Health Department staff and Safe Kids Adirondack President Holly Kipp with children from Schroon Lake during a recent bike helmet fitting and safety education event.

Nourishing News from WIC

Cooking on the Move with WIC and the Charlie Cart

Our WIC team has been staying busy getting out into the community and visiting our regular WIC clinics. One of our favorite tools to bring along with us lately is our Charlie Cart. If you haven't seen it yet, it is a mobile kitchen on wheels that allows us to set up just about anywhere and show how simple, healthy cooking can be.

We love bringing the Charlie Cart right into our WIC clinics to connect with families. It gives us a great space to chat, answer questions, and do live cooking demonstrations. We use it to make various dishes, showing how to turn everyday ingredients and WIC-approved foods into quick, nutritious, and budget-friendly meals.

WIC N Pick is Back for 2026!

Our popular WIC N Pick program is returning for the season, and we can't wait to get outside with our WIC families.

Our first session of the summer is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7th.

Spaces fill up fast, so please give our office a call to sign up and secure your spot. 518-873-3500.
