Making a Difference

"I have volunteered with Haven House as a shuttle bus driver one day per week for four plus years (as my schedule allows).  I really enjoy interacting with the families as I drive them to the hospitals.  This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the cheerful Haven House staff and people using their services from all around the world.  It's my chance to give back to the community as Jesus would want each of us to do."

Haven House:
Volunteers are needed for the next Haven House work day on Saturday, May 19 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.  We'll be cooking, organizing items in the kitchens, cleaning the community kitchens, carpet cleaning and moving furniture.
To sign up and learn more about volunteering with Haven House, please contact David Evans.

Epworth Children and Family Services:
Epworth is planning a picnic with a devotional, music, and games for Epworth Residential kids on Saturday, June 16 from 11 am - 2 pm.  Four volunteers (age 21+) are needed to help grill burgers and hot dogs and participate in games with the residents.  This is a great time to become involved with the young people in residence and bring them a period of happiness and joy.  For more information, please contact Eileen Koon at 314-560-6689.

Balancing the Scales (Meramec Elementary School):
In April, St. Louis Public Schools presented Living Word's "Balancing the Scales" Mission with a "Stellar Award," given to only four congregations of the many who serve. Our reading and doing special projects with children, providing teacher luncheons, supplying needed essentials for both students and staff at Meramec Elementary School have all been so appreciated. Mr. Strong, the school principal, asked his teachers what they wanted most for next year. One replied that she just wanted the church to come back.

We are coming back and not waiting for the new school year to start. This summer we are asking for MANY volunteers. We plan to work on the building's interior, painting and decorating the weekend of June 23 and 24 so if this is your kind of project we welcome you. Volunteers are wanted as well for the Reading Camp to be held for Meramec students July 23 through July 27 at Living Word. We need lots of helpers for meals, reading buddies, volunteer leaders, and two bus drivers each day to pick up and return the children. We can promise you this: You will be gratified by the experience.

If you don't want to wait till July to begin making a difference in the life of a child, consider assisting in Sunday School which has an ongoing need for teachers, especially in the summer, as does Bible School. Contact Pastor Brenda Stobbe at for information on participating in some great programs. You'll be glad you did.
