Honorary Corn Roasters start to be announced
FridayMusings is pleased tp announce that Wayne County Commissioner Terry Marecki (L) and Livonia City Councilwoman Cathy White (L) will be the first two honorary corn roasters on September 15th, 1:00-4:00, Stymelski Park. They will join the Livonia Lions in making sure that attendees get the most succulent, mouth watering corn on the cob. 

Marecki and White will be on hand at 1:00 as the Good Old Fashioned Neighborhood Corn Roast
kicks off with over 25 community groups, free corn, free pulled pork sandwiches, free Kona Ice, and lots of great people calling Livonia home. Conversation is free also.

Kona Ice Truck set to participate for third year
Jim (R) and Katie Jolly along with the entire Jolly family will be sponsoring the Kona Ice Truck for  he third year at the Good Old Fashioned Neighborhood Corn Roast. "This is a tradition that we enjoy and are happy to have our family involved," Jolly commented in announcing that his family will once again be providing free Kona Ice to those attending on the 15th. 

Volunteer students are ready to shuck
If you think that the hundreds of corn on the cob are picked up already shucked guess again. Thanks to Carrie LaCross (R),  Volunteer/Sponsorship Coordinator at the  Livonia Family YMCA, we will once again have 20 student volunteers removing all the corn husks and helping organizations set up their tables, displays, canopies. 

Best Kept Secrets to first 750 arrivals
Dan MacIver, Financial and Portfolio Advisers, will be on hand to distribute the Bob Hardies' Best Kept Secrets to those attending the Good Old Fashioned Corn Roast.

The four books, and yes we have found an additional 100 of Volume One, were commissioned by the late Bob Hardies. They are still being mailed to new families moving into Livonia. They are mailed every month as a way to welcome newcomers to the community. 

"We mail out nearly 500 every month and have for the past 18 months. We will be passing out the books to those at the corn roast as a way to keep the vision of Bob Hardies alive," comments MacIver.







3rd Annual Wiggin Out at the Y August 26th--today
I wanted to share with you that our Livonia YMCA is having their 3rd Annual Wiggin' Out at the Y on Monday August 26th from 4pm-8pm in the Upper Fitness Studio.

Khrome Hair Salon will be offering free haircuts in exchange for hair donations benefiting Wigs 4 Kids. Sandwiches and drinks will be provided for donors. 

Last year they collected enough hair donations to make 3 wigs, and the goal is at least 5 this year! (FYI: It takes 7-10 ponytails to make one wig!) 

One Livonia resident is asking candidates what they think about unleashed pets on Bryant Field

Livonia is a community designed around neighborhoods. Each neighborhood when combined with others form a hometown of which we are all proud. For decades the question has been asked "when issues arise in individual neighborhoods who do the homeowners contact, the Mayor's office, members of the city council, or the various departments directly? 

Steve Johnson who lives in the neighborhood south of Bryant Field on the East side of Merriman Road wrote in a letter to FridayMusings that "It is really scary to see about 12 dogs running loose, with their owners trailing far behind.  Or, to see Pit Bulls and Dobermans without leashes.  Considering the 9 year old that just lost her life (in Detroit), we would hope the leaders of the city (of Livonia) will sit up and take notice of this Public Safety issue."

Johnson distributed a flyer to neighbors who live near Bryant Field and the neighboring woods. Musings is sharing the letter with our readers while wondering what our candidates for Livonia City Council and Mayor think of the issue and what you might like to see done.

"We want to notify you of a growing dog problem at the field and woods we all live near. There are many dogs being run without leashes, and groups of dogs without leashes. Known aggressive breeds such as pit bulls, doberman pinscher and German shepherds have been seen running far away from their owners, often the dog is out of sight in the woods, or too far away from the owner to control it.
Should this be the case at Bryant Field?

"This is simply not a safe condition, and a recipe for tragedy. Dogs are unpredictable, and in groups even more unpredictable. Also, we fear for the safety of the children who pass over the creek, as they go home from Coolidge school. This is at the same time a group of people with unleashed dogs gather near where the yellow poles are at the north east end of the field.

"At parks and public places in Livonia people are required to have their dogs leashed at all times, and their dog's waste picked up. We feel this rule should be extended to this field and woods also, to keep our children, grandchildren and ourselves safe. Many of these people do not pick up their dog's waste. The field and woods are littered with dog waste, a classified pollutant, which is not a fertilizer. It is polluting the land, the water, and the air. Please help by joining together with us in our effort to make this a safe and clean environment once again.

Realizing that this is one resident and one concern but he has asked the candidates for Livonia office to weigh in and ask "what do you think of this neighborhood issue?" Is it too much to ask pet owners to have their pets on a lease on what is arguably public land? It is too much to ask pet owners to pick up pet waste on what is arguably public land? I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

Okay Livonia. On your mark. Get set. Go. 5K. Run or walk.
In partnership with the City of Livonia, Livonia Public Schools, the Livonia Chamber of Commerce and the Livonia Parks and Recreation, St. Mary Mercy Livonia will host the Healthy Livonia 5K run/walk on Sunday September 8.

The Healthy Livonia 5K is a celebration of life and encourages health and wellness in our community.

$35 - August 26 through race day

Online registration closes on Wednesday, September 4 at 11:59 p.m. Onsite registration is available at packet pick-up and race day. Register by clicking here.

Participants can register as an individual or team. If you are registering as a team, you will need a team captain and team name.  All participants will receive a bib number with B-tag chip for timing and T-shirts are available while supplies last.   Online registration closes on  Wednesday, September 4 at 11:59 p.m.

Packet Pick-Up
Packet pick-up will be held on Friday, September 6 from noon to 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary Mercy Livonia near the Our Lady of Hope Cancer Center. Please park in the South Parking Lot off of Levan Road and enter from the hospital's South Entrance.

Race Day Registration
Participants can register race day from 7 to 8:30 a.m. in the registration tent, located near the North Entrance of the hospital. Registration is $35 and includes a bib number with B-tag chip for timing and T-shirts are available while supplies last.

The Course
The Healthy Livonia 5K course is USATF-certified. The race will begin at St. Mary Mercy Livonia near the North Entrance. Runners and walkers will be routed through the residential streets of Livonia. A water station will be available at the half-way point. The course will end across at Levan Medical Center.   Race day parking will be available in the North Entrance parking lots off of Five Mile Road. Volunteers will be directing cars to the appropriate location.

Results and Awards
Race results will be available immediately following the race. Results will be viewable and the results table and will later be posted online.  Awards will be given to the first, second and third place male and female of each age division. Awards be presented near the finish line at Levan Medical Center. The awards ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m.

This was the project that was designated the best new project of the year 2018 by FridayMusings. It brought people together for a fun evening, young and old alike. Great spaghetti. Great cause. Great people.

FridayMusings will continue to post information about the 8 candidates running for City Council and the 2 candidates running for Mayor. When we receive notification of an event and as was done in the primary we will post announcements without editing.


Mayoral candidates, Maureen Miller Brosnan and Laura Toy, as well as the eight city council candidates will be invited to appear at the Livonia Chamber of Commerce candidate forums on Thursday, September 26 at 7 p.m. at the Livonia City Hall auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public. Members of the audience will be able to ask questions of the candidates as time permits. The event will be recorded and available for viewing in the weeks leading up to the November 5 election.
