Livonia's Kindness Rally hopes to spread positivity through kind acts September 21st. Be a part of it.

Kindness is coming to Livonia this September! And here is how you and your organization can be a part of this exciting Jaycee program.

On Saturday, September 21st from 12pm-4pm teams from around the community will enter into a family-friendly competition to see who can do the most acts of kindness in four hours. Teams are equipped with supplies, shirts, and a list of random act of kindness "challenges" that involve helping others and bettering the community. From cleaning up trash and writing thank-you notes to paying library fines, teams will work to cross off challenges and see who has done the most good deeds by the end of the event. Creativity is encouraged! Teams are also given the opportunity to come up with some kindness ideas on their own. 2019 marks the fourth year of The Kindness Rally, and Livonia is excited to be a part of it!

In fact, this project is a direct result of the "Jaycees" commitment toward community impact. The Kindness Rally originated right here in Michigan by Jaycee member, Susan Dials, in 2016. Since then, this event has seen tremendous growth. To date, over 4,450 acts of kindness have been completed through this initiative. 

The rally is free to participants! Community organizations, residents, and local businesses are encouraged to create and register a team of 4-5 people to participate along with the Livonia Jaycees. There are also opportunities to sponsor a team if your business would like to contribute to the cause but can not directly participate. It is very important for teams to register on Eventbrite by September 9th to secure their spot, guarantee an event t-shirt, and help organizers plan for supplies. The Kindness Rally is completely funded by donations and sponsorships. These contributions help us purchase supplies and t-shirts to make sure every interested party can participate. This year has seen generous sponsorships donated from local businesses and organizations, such as The Way Church in Livonia. As a not-for-profit civic organization, all donations to the Livonia Jaycees will go directly into the community through this project effort.

For 2019, this event is a part of the JCI International 'Peace is Possible' campaign and the United Nations' International Day of Peace on September 21st. Though this
 project has a wide reach, The Kindness Rally is designed to make a positive impact on people and organizations directly in the local community. In Michigan alone we have 24 communities involved this year and counting! You can view all participating locations at thekindnessrally.eventbrite.com .

Partnering with Bob Modes and the Blue Plate Diner to provide pulled pork sandwiches for those attending the Good Old Fashioned Corn Roast is Maureen Miller Brosnan. Last yearThe Blue Plate's Pulled Pork was a popular stop in Stymelski Park. Corn, pulled pork, soda pop, Kona ice and 26 community organizations. A perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon, September 15, 1:00 - 4:00.

The Livonia Jaycees for the second year in a row will be staffing the soda pop station where friendly faces will be providing pop for those who are thirsty or want to wash down the corn on the cob or maybe the pulled pork sandwiches. So make it a point to thank the Jaycees for providing the free beverages to those attending the Good Old Fashioned Corn Roast.

Livonia Lions once again preparing mouth watering corn-on-the-cob 
The Livonia Lions will arrive by 9:00 on Sunday, September 15, to prepare the corn that has already been shucked by the student volunteers. They will set up the serving wagon, prepare the butter and salt and get ready for the first order of corn to be cooked, nice and hot and ready for those attending the Good Old Fashioned party to chow down. Maybe Lion Jerry Pfeiffer will bring his corny corn hat and give the kids something to smile at.

Livonia Youth Symphony will be on hand
As they did last year the Livonia Youth Symphony will be on hand to share their musical abililty at 2:00 for those attending the corn roast.  They  will have a table where you can stop by and say hello and meet some of their members! Just an amazing group of young people who are a part of a group that is the oldest youth symphony in the state of Michigan, founded in 1958 and also an Inductee into the 1835 Livonia City Hall of Fame.

St. Mary Mercy Livonia will host   Senior Fit classes this fall, beginning in September.  Senior Fit is a FREE exercise program for people age 55 and over that encourages senior adults to exercise their way to a healthier lifestyle.  The program features standing and chair exercises that build strength and flexibility, as well as improve balance and cardiovascular fitness.

The Arts Commission is excited to bring a new music venue to the City.  And you are invited to be a part of this exciting evening right here in your hometown.

On September 20, 2019 the music of Alexander Zonjic, renowned jazz flutist, will be featured in the Alexander Blue House in Greenmead. 

 Tickets available online through the City website and can also be purchased on the 5th  floor of City Hall.  Doors will open at 7:30, concert at 8:00 pm.  Limited seating.  Be sure and order soon.

 
Jim Davis is using Facebook to share his view on recreational marijuana and asking for readers to share their perspective.
 Candidates get questions in the course of the campaign. They meet hundreds of Livonia Citizens and field many questions. Last issue we took a look at Brandon McCullough and one of his positions seeking feedback. Today we look at an issue Jim Davis posted on Facebook giving his view on the city opting out of recreational marijuana.

Jim Davis posted the question. Gave his response. The typewriter responded to his response and guess what he wrote another answer creating a small thread of discussion. So let's take a look and see how civil discussion takes place between a voter and a candidate.







The Typewriter responded:    Jim, while I appreciate your well thought out answer I believe we have a difference of opinion regarding medicinal use. I support having limited zoning in Livonia, not in residential areas but perhaps in a vacant industrial sector- building for those of  us who have a medicinal card. 

It would be far better for those with Parkinson's, epilepsy, etc to have a place here in Livonia instead of having to drive into Detroit or Ann Arbor. There are, anecdotally, hundreds if not thousands of Livonia residents who require and who use marijuana for medicinal purposes. You are wise to separate recreation and medicinal and so should the city in approving for medicinal.  

Jim Answered back: Thank you for your comment! You are correct! Medical Marijuana looks different then recreational right now. Medical Marijuana rules for use enacted by the State Legislature beginning in 2008 are outlined and proscribed under Michigan Complied Laws (MCL); Michigan Medical Marijuana Act (MMMA), starting at MCL 333.26421. That is where we will find guidance regarding patient qualification, possession, cultivation, transportation, and care-giving. 

Of course you may know that the Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Division of State Government, (LARA) has more recently taken on the onerous task of licensing including; growing, processors, transporters, provisioning centers, and safety compliance and will take some time to become settled law.

Have you been to a Jaycee or Junior Chamber event and thought, "I wonder what this group is all about"? Come hang out with them at The Claddagh - Livonia where you'll have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the local chapter, what it means to be a Jaycee, and network with some amazing individuals. If being part of a group of friends that like to hang out and also run awesome projects that give back to the community sounds cool, then feel free to join. Have questions? Plenty of their members will be there to answer them.

Also, the Livonia Jaycee President Chris Crawford stated that the first round of drinks and appetizers are on him!

FridayMusings will continue to post information about the 8 candidates running for City Council and the 2 candidates running for Mayor. When we receive notification of an event and as was done in the primary we will post announcements without editing.


Mayoral candidates, Maureen Miller Brosnan and Laura Toy, as well as the eight city council candidates will be invited to appear at the Livonia Chamber of Commerce candidate forums on Thursday, September 26 at 7 p.m. at the Livonia City Hall auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public. Members of the audience will be able to ask questions of the candidates as time permits. The event will be recorded and available for viewing in the weeks leading up to the November 5 election.
