UNM Lobo Football Introduces:
The "Cherry Zone" Football Newsletter
Hello Lobo Fan!
Less than 3 weeks until the start of the 2018 campaign - which means its time to start planning your tailgate for the Saturday, September 1st (6pm MST) opener versus Incarnate Word!
We've had a busy summer at Lobo Football and we want to make sure that just like our team, our fans are ready for the 2018-2019 campaign. Twitter (@UNMLoboFB) is the best way to stay current with all the happenings of Lobo football but we know that many of our fans are not on Twitter. And, if you do follow us, we want you to have one communication that ties together all of our student-athletes' and program's accomplishments over the summer.
We're excited to share with you the first edition of our UNM Football "Cherry Zone" newsletter! This newsletter will summarize important happenings with our program along with the successes our student-athletes achieve both on and off the field. You'll receive this newsletter at least once a month and likely more often during the football season.
In this first edition, we'd excited to share with you these important updates:
- Lobo Leaders in the Community: Teton Saltes Leads in Albuquerque and Beyond
- Offensive Excitement: Offensive Coordinator Calvin Magee Brings Some New Wrinkles to the Lobos' Attack
- New Mexico & Lobo Legend Brian Urlacher inducted into NFL Hall of Fame, following a year of accolades
- All-MWC Expectations: Four Lobos receive preseason accolades but how many will finish with all-conference distinctions?
- Open Lobo Football Practices: You don't have to wait until our September 1st home opener to see the Lobos in pads
- Renaissance Men: Lobo Success in the Classroom & Weight Room: Cracking books or throwing around weights, our Lobos are succeeding.

Lobo So OL Teton Saltes' Leadership Reaches to the Lakota Nation
Our student-athletes are groomed to be leaders on the field, in their communities and later in their professions. Teton Saltes is exemplary of the Lobo Leaders for Life that come from our program. Read about his activism in improving social and economic conditions in the Lakota nation.

"
Teton is representing the University of New Mexico in an incredible way; there are so many young native people, not only here in South Dakota, but across Indian country that want to be a Lobo because of Teton. He is such a special young man. You should be very proud that this young man is a Lobo! Thank you and good luck on the upcoming season; we will be at as many games as possible! Go Lobos!"
--Darnell Brave Eagle, Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota
What made Mr. Brave Eagle reach out to Coach Davie to extol Teton? Well first, it is important that you understand who Teton is: He's a sophomore offensive lineman from Valley High School who exemplifies the well-rounded leaders our program develops. He is
self-taught with several musical instruments (guitar, piano and saxophone) and spends each summer traveling to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Teton's investment and activism in the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation extends beyond his summer visits. Earlier this year, he engaged tribal leadership with a compelling proposal to improve conditions for Lakota youth, including a thoughtful analysis of the reservation's budget allocations that pointed to opportunities for investing in the community's children. His proposal grew into an ongoing dialogue with leaders, gathering a groundswell of community support that hopefully results in meaningful improvements.
There is so much more to share of story. Please look for a future story on GoLobos.com. And, while we highlight Teton's activism, everyday our players lead in Albuquerque and also in their hometowns. We will bring you more of these stories throughout the year.

Mr. Magee Comes to Albuquerque
By now, you likely know that Coach Magee has joined the Lobos' staff as Offensive Coordinator and Running Backs coach. But, do you know the play-calling experience he brings to Albuquerque?
Coach Magee comes to UNM immediately from the University of Arizona and, like Coach Davie and Coach Cosgrove, brings decades of major college football experience with him. Coach Magee played football at Southern University, graduating in 1984 and then went on to play with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1985-1989 (yes, he donned those awesome, old school creamsicle Tampa Bay Bucs uniforms when catching passes from Steve DeBerg).
Coach Magee began his college coaching career at the University of South Florida and was hired away by then West Virginia head coach, Rich Rodriguez. Notably, Coach Rodriguez along with Coach Magee are widely acknowledged as the minds behind the "spread offense." Coach Magee then served as Offensive Coordinator at the University of Michigan, Pittsburgh and then UofA. What does Coach Magee's addition to UNM mean for the offensive? Here's an excerpt from a recent interview with Coach Davie:
"We've some really talented receivers on our team, a couple of those guys we recruited as quarterbacks. We've got a lot of perimeter athletes that I don't think we could take advantage of if we stayed in the exact type of offense were were in. Now, we're in a situation where I'm really am excited about our receiving corp and our quarterback's ability to throw the ball."

New Mexico Favorite Son Inducted into NFL Hall of Fame
Green chile, red chile and..... Brian Urlacher are synonymous with New Mexico. Brian needs no introduction. We know him. And we love him. Not only is he a Lobo & Chicago Bear legend, but he remains a generous leader in our community today.
We can't say much more about Brian than what has been deservedly recounted in the past week about his legendary career and generosity as a Lobo alumnus. We can say that everything you hear about his determination, athleticism and leadership on and off the field is true. He serves as the cherry and silver standard for all current and future Lobos. Below are two articles that sum up the meaning Brian has had to both New Mexico and Chicago.
Congratulations Brian - from your Lobo family.

Lobos Earn Pre-Season Honors
Four Lobos received preseason all-conference honors. But here's the real question: how many other Lobos will finish the season with
all-conference distinctions?
PS: its nice they let an O-Lineman carry the football in this photo
Offensive lineman, Aaron Jenkins, headlines the group of Lobos receiving preseason distinctions. Aaron also joined Coach Davie and linebacker Alex Hart at the Mountain West media days in Las Vegas. This senior lineman from Dallas has a chance to break the record for all-time games played as a Lobo!
Junior Elijah Lilly received 3rd Team honors as a Kick Returner and will bring his athleticism to the offensive side of the ball as a wide-receiver (after playing cornerback last year). Senior defensive lineman Cody Baker anchors the defensive side with a 3rd Team honor. And, of course, any preseason list wouldn't be complete without a Lobo running back. Senior running back Tyrone Owens who anchors our rushing attack also received 3rd Team honors.

Setting Records in the Classroom and Weight Room
Our student-athletes turned in the second best semester GPA in program history, finishing the Spring Semester with a 2.85 GPA!
48 student-athletes earned a 3.0 or higher. And, they can lift a lot of textbooks (see below).
Senior LB, DaQuan Baker deadlifted 675Lbs! Ask former Lobo LB and now Asst AD Dakota Cox if he ever got up that much weight!
Junior CB, Blair Manley (Cibola HS) deadlifted more than 3x his body weight (he weighs 200lbs). How will WRs get off his jam?
Junior DL, Aaron Blackwell, deadlifted 605lbs not once, not twice but three times. 605lbs? - the equivalent of two offensive linemen!
