A Message from the Dean

Dear College of Pharmacy Community,

As we reach the midpoint of the spring semester, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to the many people who make the UNM College of Pharmacy such a vibrant and impactful community. Spring in New Mexico brings longer days, a lot of wind, warmer weather, and a renewed sense of energy across our campus. It is a time of momentum, and that spirit is reflected in the continued accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners.

This issue of our newsletter highlights just a few examples of the work happening across the College. From progress on our major building renovation to the important contributions of our faculty, students, and alumni, it is inspiring to see the many ways our community continues to advance education, research, and patient care throughout New Mexico and beyond.

I want to especially thank our faculty and staff for their dedication to teaching, mentoring, and supporting our students as we move through a busy semester. Your commitment to excellence ensures that our learners receive not only a world-class education, but also the guidance and encouragement needed to become the next generation of pharmacy leaders.

I am also deeply grateful to our alumni and partners across the state who continue to represent the UNM College of Pharmacy in their communities. Your work expands access to care, strengthens our profession, and reinforces the mission that has guided the College for more than 80 years.

To our students—thank you for your energy, service, and commitment to improving the health of others. Whether you are engaging in outreach, advocacy, research, or clinical training, you continue to demonstrate the values that define our profession.

Finally, thank you to the many supporters and friends of the College who make our work possible through their generosity, mentorship, and engagement. Your partnership helps us continue to grow our programs, expand our facilities, and create new opportunities for the people we serve.

As we welcome the arrival of spring in New Mexico, I look forward to the many milestones and celebrations ahead in the coming months. Thank you for all that you do to support the mission of the UNM College of Pharmacy.

Donald A. Godwin, Ph.D

Poison Centers Save Lives and Money, New Study Says

A new, independent analysis by the RAND Corporation found that U.S. poison centers collectively save an estimated $3.1 billion each year by reducing unnecessary emergency room visits, shortening hospital stays and preventing serious health outcomes. For every $1 invested, communities receive an average return of $16.77 in benefits, according to the report. "This report shows we're doing more with less, so if we want to continue to support poison centers and the work they're doing, we need to invest more in poison centers," said Joseph Lambson, PharmD, DBAT, the Director of the New Mexico Poison & Drug Information Center, which operates within the UNM College of Pharmacy.
